Steady-state clouds of microparticles were observed, levitating in a low-frequency glow discharge generated in an elongated vertical glass tube. A heated ring was attached to the tube wall outside, so that the particles, exhibiting a global convective motion, were confined vertically in the region above the location of the heater. It is shown that the particle vortices were induced by the convection of neutral gas, and the mechanism responsible for the gas convection was the thermal creep along the inhomogeneously heated tube walls. The phenomenon of thermal creep, which commonly occurs in rarefied gases under the presence of thermal gradients, should generally play a substantial role in experiments with complex plasmas.

The long-term safety and durability of anchor systems are the focus of slope maintenance management and sustainable operation. This study presents the observed temperature, humidity, and anchor bolt stress at varying depths from four-year remote real-time monitoring of the selected loess highway cut-slope. The potential correlation between slope hydrothermal environment and anchor stress is analyzed.

Single-pier, dual-bearing bridges are susceptible to effects such as concrete creep, thermal expansion, and uneven foundation settlement. When combined with eccentric loading from heavy vehicles, these factors collectively can significantly increase the risk of bridge overturning. To address this risk, a comprehensive analysis of the bridge overturning mechanism was conducted.

Secondary interactions, such as hydrogen bonding or phase separation, can enhance the stability of dynamic covalent materials without compromising on desired dynamic properties. Here, we investigate the combination of multiple secondary interactions in dynamic covalent materials based on acylsemicarbazides (ASCs), with the aim of achieving tunable material properties. The effects of different ASC substituents on the dynamic covalent and hydrogen bonding capabilities were investigated in a small molecule study using a combined experimental and theoretical approach, and revealed the presence of cooperative hydrogen-bonding interactions in 2 directions in one of the derivatives.

Signal drift and hysteresis of flexible piezoresistive sensors pose significant challenges against the widespread applications in emerging fields such as electronic skin, wearable equipment for metaverse and human-AI (artificial intelligence) interfaces. To address the creep and relaxation issues associated with pressure-sensitive materials, a highly stable piezoresistive composite is proposed, using polyamide-imide (PAI) fibers as the matrix and in situ grafted-polymerized polyaniline (PANI) as the semi-conducting layer. The PAI with large rigid fluorenylidene groups exhibits a high glass transition temperature of 372 °C (PAI 5-5), which results in an extremely long relaxation time at room temperature and consequently offers outstanding anti-creep/relaxation performances.
