The deuteron-emission channel in the beta decay of the halo nucleus (11)Li was measured at the Isotope Separator and Accelerator facility at TRIUMF by implanting postaccelerated (11)Li ions into a segmented silicon detector. The events of interest were identified by correlating the decays of (11)Li with those of the daughter nuclei. This method allowed the energy spectrum of the emitted deuterons to be extracted, free from contributions from other channels, and a precise value for the branching ratio B(d)=1.30(13)x10(-4) to be deduced for E(c.m.)>200 keV. The results provide the first unambiguous experimental evidence that the decay takes place essentially in the halo of (11)Li and that it proceeds mainly to the (9)Li+d continuum, opening up a new means to study the halo wave function of (11)Li.

First Report of pv. Causing Leaf Spot Disease on Broccoli in China.

Plant Dis

September 2024

Institute of Vegetables and Flowers, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing, No. 12, Zhongguancun Nandajie, Beijing, 100081, China, Beijing, China, 100081;

Article Synopsis
  • Broccoli, a valuable vegetable in China, is facing a serious leaf spot disease that has caused about 60% incidence in a Weifang City field, leading to significant economic impacts.
  • *The disease manifests as dark, circular spots on leaves, which can develop into holes due to tissue decay.
  • *Lab analysis of affected samples revealed 12 similar bacterial strains, which were characterized as Gram-negative, aerobic, and rod-shaped, with the ability to utilize various sugars.

Direct Collapse Supermassive Black Holes from Relic Particle Decay.

Phys Rev Lett

August 2024

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of California Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California 90095-1547, USA.

We investigate the formation of high-redshift supermassive black holes (SMBHs) via the direct collapse of baryonic clouds, where the unwanted formation of molecular hydrogen is successfully suppressed by a Lyman-Werner (LW) photon background from relic particle decay. We improve on existing studies by dynamically simulating the collapse, accounting for the adiabatic contraction of the DM halo, as well as the in situ production of the LW photons within the cloud which reduce the impact of the cloud's shielding. We find a viable parameter space where the decay of either some of the dark matter or all of a subdominant decaying species successfully allows direct collapse of the cloud to a SMBH.

The neutron-rich unbound fluorine isotope ^{30}F_{21} has been observed for the first time by measuring its neutron decay at the SAMURAI spectrometer (RIBF, RIKEN) in the quasifree proton knockout reaction of ^{31}Ne nuclei at 235  MeV/nucleon. The mass and thus one-neutron-separation energy of ^{30}F has been determined to be S_{n}=-472±58(stat)±33(sys)  keV from the measurement of its invariant-mass spectrum. The absence of a sharp drop in S_{n}(^{30}F) shows that the "magic" N=20 shell gap is not restored close to ^{28}O, which is in agreement with our shell-model calculations that predict a near degeneracy between the neutron d and fp orbitals, with the 1p_{3/2} and 1p_{1/2} orbitals becoming more bound than the 0f_{7/2} one.
