Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants considerably affect diabetes mellitus by disturbing mitochondrial function, energy metabolism, oxidative stress response, and even insulin secretion. The m.3243 A > G variants is associated with maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD), where early onset diabetes and hearing loss are prominent features.

A large proportion of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients suffer from various types of chronic sleep disturbances, including sleep fragmentation (SF). In addition, impaired mitochondrial biogenesis is an important feature of AD, but whether it is altered in sleep disorders has not been fully elucidated. Hence, we aimed to investigate the relationship between SF and mitochondrial biogenesis and the possible impact of SF on AD-related pathology.

Glaucoma is a group of diseases characterized by progressive optic nerve degeneration, with the characteristic pathological change being death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), which ultimately causes visual field loss and irreversible blindness. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) remains the most important risk factor for glaucoma, but the exact mechanism responsible for the death of RGCs is currently unknown. Neurotrophic factor deficiency, impaired mitochondrial structure and function, disrupted axonal transport, disturbed Ca homeostasis, and activation of apoptotic and autophagic pathways play important roles in RGC death in glaucoma.

Host expansion facilitates tephritid flies to expand their ranges. Unraveling the mechanisms of host expansion will help to efficiently control these pests. Our previous works showed mitochondrial complex I genes Ndufs1, Ndufs3, and Ndufa7 being upregulated during host expansion of Bactrocera tau (Walker), one of the highly hazardous species of tephritids.
