We extend recent results for estimating the parameters of a one-dimensional Gaussian profile to two-dimensional profiles, deriving the exact covariance matrix of the estimated parameters. While the exact form is easy to compute, we provide a set of close approximations that allow the covariance to take on a simple analytic form. This not only provides new insight into the behavior of the estimation parameters, but also lays a foundation for clarifying previously published work. We also show how to calculate the parameter variances for the case of truncated sampling, where the profile lies near the edge of the array detector. Finally, we calculate expressions for the bias in the classical formulation of the problem and provide an approach for its removal. This allows us to show how the bias affects the problem of choosing an optimal pixel size for minimizing parameter variances.

Omics data provide a plethora of quantifiable information that can potentially be used to identify biomarkers targeting the physiological processes and ecological phenomena of organisms. However, omics data have not been fully utilized because current prediction methods in biomarker construction are susceptible to data multidimensionality and noise. We developed OmicSense, a quantitative prediction method that uses a mixture of Gaussian distributions as the probability distribution, yielding the most likely objective variable predicted for each biomarker.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant public health concern, emphasizing the need for innovative therapeutic strategies to improve patient outcomes. This study aimed to develop a highly efficient nanocarrier for targeted drug delivery, enhancing drug efficacy while minimizing concentrations and limiting adverse effects. We synthesized protein-based β-lactoglobulin (βlg) nanoparticles (NPs), loaded with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and sodium butyrate (NaB), and further functionalized with folic acid (FA) for specific targeting of folate receptor-positive CRC cells.

The "oblique effect" refers to the reduced visual performance for stimuli presented at oblique orientations compared to those at cardinal orientations. In the cortex, neurons that respond to specific orientations are organized into orientation columns. This raises the question: Are the orientation signals in the iso-orientation columns associated with cardinal orientations the same as those in the iso-orientation columns associated with oblique orientations, and is this signal influenced by experience? To explore this, iso-orientation columns in visual area 18 were examined using optical imaging techniques.

Acylaminoacyl-peptide hydrolase (APEH), a serine peptidase that belongs to the prolyl oligopeptidase (POP) family, catalyzes removal of N-terminal acetylated amino acid residues from peptides. As a key regulator of protein N-terminal acetylation, APEH was involved in many important physiological processes while its aberrant expression was correlated with progression of various diseases such as inflammation, diabetics, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and cancers. However, while emerging attention has been attracted in APEH-related disease diagnosis and drug discovery, the mechanisms behind APEH and related disease progression are still unclear; thus, further investigating the physiological role and function of APEH is of great importance.

Agomelatine is an atypical antidepressant with a long half-life and the mechanism of action similar to melatonin. Agomelatine is a strong antioxidant and its anti-inflammatory effect has been reported in many studies. The current study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of agomelatine loaded in targeted nanoparticles (NPs) in an experimental colitis model induced by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS).
