A method of interpreting data of multifrequency Raman lidar sensing is developed. An algorithm for separating aerosol layers with different scattering properties and subsequently estimating the average value of the lidar ratio and Angström parameter within individual layers is suggested. The algorithm allows the error of reconstructing the backscattering coefficient from daytime observations to be at least halved. A well-posed numerical differentiation algorithm for determining the extinction coefficient is suggested for the interpretation of nighttime measurements based on the transformation of the range of allowable values that requires a solution of nonlinear equations. An iterative procedure envisaged for linearization improves the spatial resolution compared with the conventional methods. The methods can be successfully used to process routine lidar measurements under conditions of a priori uncertainty.

Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy is a long-standing method for the exploration of electronic structures of transition ion complexes. The difficulty of its analysis varies considerably, not only with the nature of the spin system, but more so with the relative magnitudes of the magnetic interactions to which the spin is subject, where particularly challenging cases ensue when two interactions are of comparable magnitude. A case in point is the triplet system S = 1 of coordination complexes with two unpaired electrons when the electronic Zeeman interaction and the electronic zero-field interaction are similar in strength.

Saturation-recovery (SR)-EPR can determine electron spin-lattice relaxation rates in liquids over a wide range of effective viscosity, making it especially useful for biophysical and biomedical applications. Here, I develop exact solutions for the SR-EPR and SR-ELDOR rate constants of N-nitroxyl spin labels as a function of rotational correlation time and spectrometer operating frequency. Explicit mechanisms for electron spin-lattice relaxation are: rotational modulation of the N-hyperfine and electron-Zeeman anisotropies (specifically including cross terms), spin-rotation interaction, and residual frequency-independent vibrational contributions from Raman processes and local modes.

Quasi-collinear geometry is a special configuration of acousto-optic (AO) diffraction that provides an extremely large AO interaction length for achieving extremely high spectral resolution of AO tunable filters (AOTFs). Large AO interaction length also makes it possible to implement multifrequency diffraction in quasi-collinear AOTFs, which has found multiple applications in modern optoelectronics. The most widespread of them being ultrashort laser pulse shaping when the pulse shape and spectral composition is controlled by the spectral composition of the ultrasound pulse aroused in the AO crystal.

Monitoring and stabilizing the power ratio of laser pairs is significant for high-precision atom interferometers, especially as the compact electro-optic-modulated all-fiber laser system prevails. In this Letter, we demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, method to in situ probe the relative power of laser pairs and to stabilize the power ratio of two Raman lasers using a high-dispersion virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) etalon. Sub-microsecond resolution on probing laser power transformation during the atom interferometer sequence is achieved and the power ratio of two Raman lasers (PRTR) is tightly locked with high bandwidth despite environmental disturbances, showing an Allan deviation of 4.

We have investigated the effects of temperature, diameter and metal catalyst type on the growth of inner nanotubes inside metallocene-filled single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The effects on the yield of different chiralities of inner nanotubes were scrutinized by multifrequency Raman spectroscopy. The investigated diameters range from ~0.
