Ginteam, Unit of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, Corso Marconi 35, Torino, Italy.

Published: July 2009

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and safety of vaginal removal of ovaries at the time of vaginal hysterectomy.

Materials And Methods: All patients candidate to hystero-salpingo-oophorectomy by transvaginal approach, between 1 March 2004 and 28 February 2007, were admitted in the study.

Results: Of the 472 women included in the study, 432 (91.5%) underwent hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy by vaginal approach. There was only one case of major vessel injury, but no patients required blood transfusion. All the operations were performed only by vaginal route and no conversion to the abdominal route was required.

Conclusion: The need to perform oophorectomy should not be considered a contraindication to vaginal hysterectomy.

Background: Premenopausal risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) in women at high familial risk of ovarian cancer leads to immediate menopause. Although early natural menopause is associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk, evidence on long-term cardiovascular disease risk after early surgical menopause is scarce.

Objectives: We sought to determine the long-term influence of the timing of RRSO on the development of coronary artery calcium (CAC), an established marker for cardiovascular disease risk.

Previous studies have suggested that women with higher follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels have a greater incidence of osteoarthritis (OA) compared to women with lower FSH despite normal estrogen levels. Our previous studies also showed that FSH has a negative effect on cartilage in postmenopausal OA. However, no studies have investigated the effect of FSH on the synovium.
