Krkosek et al. (Reports, 14 December 2007, p. 1772) claimed that sea lice spread from salmon farms placed wild pink salmon populations "on a trajectory toward rapid local extinction." Their prediction is inconsistent with observed pink salmon returns and overstates the risks from sea lice and salmon farming.

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is an iconic species of significant ecological and economic importance. Their downstream migration as smolts represents a critical life-history stage that exposes them to numerous challenges, including passage through hydropower plants. Understanding and predicting fine-scale movement patterns of smolts near hydropower plants is therefore essential for adaptive and effective management and conservation of this species.

Over a decade since its discovery, piscine myocarditis virus (PMCV) remains a significant pathogen in Atlantic salmon aquaculture. Despite this significant impact, the genomic landscape, evolutionary dynamics, and virulence factors of PMCV are poorly understood. This study enhances the existing PMCV sequence dataset by adding 34 genome sequences and 202 new ORF3 sequences from clinical cardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS) cases in Norwegian aquaculture.

Heterogeneity of the rearing environment in farmed animals can improve welfare and stocking success by enhancing natural behaviours, reducing stress, and decreasing pathogen occurrence. Although microbial diversity is often associated with well-being, their direct and indirect effects on health of farmed animals remain underexplored. We examined the impact of structural heterogeneity of aquaculture tanks on microbial communities in tank biofilm and fish gut microbiome.

In this study, we examined Pacific salmon decline and ecosystem function through Western science and Indigenous, Teslin Tlingit knowledge. We tested relationships of riparian tree growth and nitrogen composition at the limit of Pacific salmon distribution on the Teslin Tlingit Council (TTC) Traditional Territory in Southern Yukon, studied ecosystem roles of salmon and population declines in the area, and the interactions of these processes. Within sites, tree growth was positively related to salmon escapement at all salmon-bearing sites and not at the negative (salmon-free) control site.

The aging population is stimulating increased demand for dysphagia-oriented foods, yet most current options are made of ultra-processed macronutrients and lack high-quality protein and ω-3 fatty acids. This study explores the use of whole salmon fillets as a myofibrillar protein source to stabilize salmon backbone oil, creating ω-3-rich emulsion gels (50-60 vol%) for dysphasia individuals. Two-step high-pressure homogenization (HPH; 50 MPa) improved emulsion texture, storage stability, and swallowability (IDDSI level 4) by reducing oil droplet size (from 20 to 2 μm) and increasing elastic modulus by 6-8 times and viscosity by more than 10 times.
