Objective: To investigate the distribution of several types of clefts among adolescents and adults receiving treatment at the Center for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, Unifenas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil.
Methods And Materials: A total 154 untreated patients of low socioeconomic means with cleft lips and/or palates, without additional malformations, who came to the Center for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies for treatment were analyzed, and clinical and socioeconomic variables were detailed.
Results: A predominance of complete cleft lip and palate, either unilateral or bilateral, was observed (52.60%), followed by isolated cleft lip (33.12%) and isolated cleft palate (14.28%). A discrete relationship between cleft palate and the female gender was noticed, and males were more affected by other types of clefts.
Conclusions: Non-Caucasian males with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate constituted the main profile of affected individuals.

The surgical ciliated cyst is a newly added entity under the cysts of the jaws in the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Head and Neck Tumours (2022). Cleft lip and palate anomalies constitute both aesthetic and functional impairments for affected individuals. While an individual with an unrepaired cleft palate may adjust somewhat to the associated feeding challenges as he or she gets older, the consequent speech impairment is amenable primarily to surgery. It is pertinent to assess how well speech function is restored in individuals with cleft after surgical repairs.

Extensive and closely coordinated remodeling processes take place in the periodontal ligament (PDL) and the adjacent bone during orthodontic tooth movement. In complex orthodontic cases, it is necessary to move teeth into an augmented bony defect, for example, in patients with cleft lip, alveolus, and palate. The important role of the PDL during tooth movement is well accepted but not fully understood.
