Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the sorption isotherms and degradation kinetics of 17beta-estradiol (E2) at a low levels (microg/L) by anoxic activated sludge. The effects of temperatures and the concentrations of electron acceptor on the sorption and degradation were also investigated. Results showed that, when the initial concentrations of E2 were 5-15 microg/L, E2 was completely degraded after 2 h under anoxic conditions. Anoxic degradation of E2 in the activated sludge can be described by first-order reaction kinetics. During degradation, E2 sorption was well correlated by both Freundlich and linear adsorption isothermal model at different temperatures. The biodegradation behavior was inside the sludge phase. The transfer of the compound between the water phase and the sludge phase followed a linear adsorption isotherm. Temperature exerted significant effects on both the sorption and degradation of E2. The increase of temperature enhanced the E2 biodegradation rate but decreased E2 adsorption capacity on the sludge. The first-order reaction constants for E2 anoxic degradation at the temperatures of 10, 20 and 30 degrees C were 2.411, 3.045, and 3.527 h(-1), respectively. The distribution coefficients (k(d)) were 540.9, 460.4, 396.9 L/kg for 10, 20, 30 degrees C, respectively. To some extent, the first-order rate constant of E2 anoxic degradation was infected by NO3-; -N concentration (10-30 mg/L).

Photosynthetic microbes have evolved and successfully adapted to the ever-changing environmental conditions in complex microhabitats throughout almost all ecosystems on Earth. In the absence of light, they can sustain their biological functionalities through aerobic respiration, and even in anoxic conditions through anaerobic metabolic activity. For a suspension of photosynthetic microbes in an anaerobic environment, individual cellular motility is directly controlled by its photosynthetic activity, i.

Giant viruses (GVs; ) impact the biology and ecology of a wide range of eukaryotic hosts, with implications for global biogeochemical cycles. Here, we investigated GV niche separation in highly stratified Lake A at the northern coast of Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada. This lake is composed of a layer of ice-covered freshwater that overlies saltwater derived from the ancient Arctic Ocean, and it therefore provides a broad gradient of environmental conditions and ecological habitats, each with a distinct protist community and rich assemblages of associated GVs.

This study innovatively developed a stacked hybrid constructed wetland, integrating the advantages of both free-water surface and subsurface flow constructed wetlands for enhanced treatment of sewage plant effluent. The effects of three different operation modes-Anoxic subsurface flow, Oxic subsurface flow, and Oxic subsurface flow with step-feeding-on sewage plant effluent treatment were thoroughly examined. Results indicated that all three modes exhibited excellent pollutant removal capabilities.

Continuously flowing wastewater-treatment processes can be configured for biological and physical selection to form and retain large biological aggregates (LBAs), along with suspended biomass that contains ordinary biological flocs and biomass that has detached from the LBAs. Suspended biomass and LBAs have different solids residence times (SRTs) and mass-transport resistances. Here, mathematical sub-models that describe metabolic processes, a 1-D biofilm, and spherical carriers that can migrate throughout a wastewater-treatment process were combined to simulate a full-scale demonstration train having anaerobic, anoxic, and oxic zones, as well as side-stream enhanced biological phosphorus removal.

Dynamic oxygen fluctuations in activated sludge were investigated to enhance valuable biochemical production during wastewater treatment. Batch experiments compared constant aeration with rapid cycling between oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor states. Fluctuating oxygen concentrations (0-2 mg/L) significantly increased production of valuable biochemicals compared to constant oxygen concentration (2 mg/L).
