Ten yeast stains were grouped and applied in pilot-scale sequencing batch reactors to treat oil-containing wastewater. The efficiency and stability of different reactors were discussed and yeast community structure was investigated by PCR-DGGE method. The results show: the group consisting of O2, G1 and W1 is markedly superior to others in efficiency and stability respects; the group absence of these 3 stains fails to form a system with high efficiency and good stability; O4 and G2 strains lead to turbid supernatant fluid and are eliminated from system step by step; the distribution of yeast cells in settlement sludge varies with different stains. When aeration is stopped, G1 deposits into lower layer but O2 or W1 distributes evenly.

Recent years have seen an increase in the development of functional Jiaosu products, including eco-friendly Jiaosu and antimicrobial healthcare fermentation products. As a result, research on the antibacterial activity of Jiaosu has attracted attention. In the present study, the endophytic yeast WCF016, which exhibits antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, was isolated from the peel of water chestnut and identified as Candida sake via morphological and phylogenetic analyses based on 26S rDNA D1/D2 region sequencing.

Although we have a good understanding of how phenotypic plasticity evolves in response to abiotic environments, we know comparatively less about responses to biotic interactions. We experimentally tested how competition and mutualism affected trait and plasticity evolution of pairwise communities of genetically modified brewer's yeast. We quantified evolutionary changes in growth rate, resource use efficiency (RUE), and their plasticity in strains evolving alone, with a competitor, and with a mutualist.

Vacuole fusion is driven by SNARE proteins that require activation-or priming-by the AAA+ protein Sec18 (NSF) before they can bring membranes together and trigger the merger of two bilayers into a continuous membrane. Sec18 resides on vacuoles prior to engaging inactive cis-SNARE complexes through its interaction with the regulatory lipid phosphatidic acid (PA). Binding PA causes Sec18 to undergo large conformational changes that keeps it bound to the membrane, thus precluding its interactions with SNAREs.

Thirty mature Quarter Horse geldings were used in a completely randomized 32-d study to test the hypotheses that supplemental live Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077 improves apparent digestion, stabilizes the fecal pH, reduces gut permeability, maintains microbial communities, and decreases inflammation in horses fed a high-starch diet. Horses were stratified by body weight, age, and body condition score (BCS) to one of two treatments: concentrate formulated with 2g starch • kg BW-1 • meal-1 (CON; n=15) or the same concentrate top-dressed with 25g/d Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077 (SC; n=15; 8×108 CFU).
