Background: In the realm of allergen immunotherapy (AIT), the quality of evidence varies across different products, making it unjustifiable to extend overall conclusions to all AIT products, as highlighted by WAO and EAACI.

Objective: To confirm the efficacy of the 300 IR 5-grass pollen sublingual AIT (SLIT)-tablet through a specific meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving patients with allergic rhino-conjunctivitis (ARC) with/without mild/intermittent asthma.

Methods: Data from published RCTs on the 300 IR 5-grass SLIT-tablet were gathered from electronic databases (MEDLINE, ISI Web of Science, LILACS, the Cochrane Library and ClinicalTrial.

Exploring complement biomarkers in suspected axial spondyloarthritis.

RMD Open

May 2024

Department of Gastroenterology, Infectiology and Rheumatology (Including Nutrition Medicine), Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Campus Benjamin Franklin, Berlin, Germany

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify lectin pathway proteins (LPPs) as potential biomarkers for diagnosing axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) in patients with either newly diagnosed axSpA or chronic low back pain (cLBP).
  • Serum samples from 515 participants were analyzed, revealing significant differences in levels of certain proteins between axSpA patients and those with cLBP, particularly showing higher L-ficolin, MASP-2, and C3dg in axSpA patients.
  • The combination of HLA-B27 with specific LPP measurements enhanced the diagnostic specificity for axSpA, but this came at the cost of sensitivity; C3dg and MASP-3 were highlighted as important markers

The 2018 ter Brugge Lecture: Problems with the Introduction of Innovations in Neurovascular Care.

Can J Neurol Sci

March 2019

Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre, University of Alberta Hospital,Edmonton, Alberta,Canada.

Most endovascular innovations have been introduced into clinical care by showing good outcomes in small enthusiastic case series of selected patients. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have rarely been performed, except for acute ischemic stroke, but even then most trial designs were too explanatory to inform clinical decisions. In this article, we review 2 × 2 tables and forest plots that summarize RCT results to examine methodological issues in the design and interpretation of clinical studies.

The aim of this study was to characterize human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS)-related knowledge and stigma among methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients and evaluate the contribution of an educational lecture in reducing risky behavior and unjustified overprotective behavior due to fear and stigma among MMT patients. Patients from an MMT clinic within a tertiary medical center were invited to an educational lecture on HIV/AIDS. Seventy participants (of current 330) were chosen by a random sample (December 2015), plus at-risk patients and HIV patients.
