Published: February 2009

Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the influence of a fluoride medium with different pHs on the corrosion resistance of three commercially pure titanium-based dental implant commercial brands, under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and EDS.

Materials And Methods: Forty-two dental implants, from three commercial brands, were used. Five years of regular use of mouth rinsing, with NaF 1500 ppm content and two different pHs, were simulated by immersing the specimens into that medium for 184 hours.

Results: SEM and EDS analyses demonstrated no evidence of corrosion on the specimens' surfaces after being submitted to fluoride ions or incorporation of fluoride ions to the set surface.

Conclusion: It was possible to conclude that both the fluoride concentration and the pH of the solutions did not exert any influence upon implant corrosion resistance.

Bioaugmentation offers an effective strategy for the bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soils. However, little is known about petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) degradation with thermophilic consortium application under high temperature. A microcosm was established to study hydrocarbons degradation, microbial communities and functional genes response using a thermophilic petroleum-degrading consortium HT.

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of phage phSE-5 to inactivate Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium in milk (at 4, 10, and 25°C), liquid whole egg, and eggshell (at 25°C for both matrices).

Methods And Results: Since the success of phage treatment in food depends on maintaining phage viability towards different food conditions, firstly the stability of phage phSE-5 at different temperatures and pHs was assessed. The effect of phage phSE-5 against S.

Enhancing fish sludge bioconversion kinetics for nutrient recovery in aquaponics using a modified biological aerated filter with a novel media of polyhedral hollow spheres.

Nutrient recovery from aquaculture sludge is vital for promoting hydroponic plant growth and achieving near-zero solid waste discharge in aquaponic systems. Modified biological aerated filters (MBAFs) are promising because of the dual capabilities of aquaculture sludge collection and aerobic mineralization. However, the bioconversion kinetics, which is indirectly related to the packed media, need to be improved.

Coumarins are a class of compounds known for their synthetic and structural versatility, as well as their properties of great interest, such as biological and photophysical activities, and their application in the analysis of molecular microenvironments and their characteristics, such as pH. In this work, the synthesis of 7-hydroxy-6-methoxy-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carboxylic acid (3-SCA) was reported, and its absorption, emission and excitation spectral properties, along with photophysical properties such as molar absorption coefficient, lifetime, and Stokes Shift (Δν) in different solvents and pHs, were evaluated for the first time. High values of fluorescence quantum yield were observed for 3-SCA in solvents of different polarities, with a lifetime of approximately 5 ns.

Sphingolipids are vital membrane components in in mammalian cells, plants, and various microbes. We aimed to explore and exploit the sphingolipid biosynthesis pathways in an oleaginous and dimorphic yeast Yarrowia lipolytica by constructing and characterizing mutant strains with specific gene deletions and integrating exogenous genes to enhance the production of long-chain bases (LCBs) and glucosylceramides (GlcCers). To block the fungal/plant-specific phytosphingosine (PHS) pathway, we deleted the SUR2 gene encoding a sphinganine C4-hydroxylase, resulting in a remarkably elevated secretory production of dihydrosphingosine (DHS) and sphingosine (So) without acetylation.
