A DNA endonuclease has been purified from eggs of Asterias forbesi by a simple four-step-purification procedure. The purified enzyme is at least 96% pure and is free of phosphatase, phosphodiesterase, and RNase. It has a pH optimum of 6.5 and does not require divalent cations. The enzyme produces 3'-phosphoryl and 5'-hydroxyl end groups. The products of exhaustive hydrolysis can be grouped in two fractions. The first fraction, 40%, contains a small amount of mononucleotides and di-, tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexanucleo-tides. The second fraction, 60%, contains oligonucleotides larger than hexanucleotides.

In starfish, a relaxin-like gonad-stimulating peptide (RGP) acts as a gonadotropin that triggers gamete maturation and spawning. In common with other relaxin/insulin superfamily peptides, RGP consists of an A- and a B-chain, with cross-linkages mediated by one intra- and two inter-chain disulfide bonds. In this study, a second relaxin-like peptide (RLP2) was identified in starfish species belonging to the orders Valvatida, Paxillosida, and Forcipulatida.

Organisms have limited resources available to invest in reproduction, causing a trade-off between the number and size of offspring. One consequence of this trade-off is the evolution of disparate egg sizes and, by extension, developmental modes. The reproductive biology and other life-history parameters were investigated for Mustelus asterias in British waters, with specimens caught from both commercial fisheries and research-vessel surveys. In total, 504 specimens [238 males, 24-99 cm total length (LT) and 266 females, 28-124 cm LT] were examined, with further information collected from 238 uterine pups. The lengths at 50% maturity were estimated as 70·4 and 81·9 cm LT for males and females, respectively.
