The potential energy surface of H(2)O-H(2) is of great importance for quantum chemistry as a test case for H(2)O-molecule interactions. It is also required for a detailed understanding of important astrophysical processes, namely, the collisional excitation of water, including the pumping of water masers and the formation of molecular hydrogen on icy interstellar dust grains. We have calculated the interaction for H(2)O-H(2) by performing both rigid-rotor (five-dimensional) and non-rigid-rotor (nine-dimensional) calculations using the coupled-cluster theory at the level of singles and doubles with perturbative corrections for triple excitations [CCSD(T)] with moderately large but thoroughly selected basis set. The resulting surface was further calibrated using high precision explicitly correlated CCSD(T)-R12 calculations on a subset of the rigid-rotor intermolecular geometries. The vibrationally averaged potential is presented in some details and is compared with the most recent rigid-rotor calculations. We explain, in particular, as to why vibrationally averaged rigid-rotor geometries are a better choice than equilibrium geometries. Our fit of the vibrationally averaged surface provides for the first time an accuracy of approximately 3 cm(-1) in the van der Waals minimum region of the interaction. The overall accuracy of the nine-dimensional surface and fit is lower but remains of the order of 3%-4% of the anisotropy in the domain spanned by the vibrational functions.

The and isomers of the chiral tagging candidate molecule, 2-fluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)oxirane, as well as the lowest energy gas-phase heterodimer of each with the argon atom, are characterized via quantum chemistry calculations and microwave rotational spectroscopy from 5 to 18 GHz and their ground state, vibrationally averaged structures, are determined. Apart from the / nature of the ring substitution and small differences in the dihedral angle specifying the rotation of the trifluoromethyl group, the two oxirane molecules and their respective argon complexes each have remarkable structural similarity. In contrast, the binding mode of argon to the oxirane, while similar for the two complexes here, is distinct from those modes observed in previous argon-fluorooxirane species.

Conformational Landscapes of 2,3-, 2,4-, 2,5-, and 2,6-Difluorobenzaldehyde Unveiled by Rotational Spectroscopy.

Department of Chemistry, Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Molecular Catalysis and Innovative Materials, Fudan University, Songhu Rd. 2005, Shanghai 200438, China.

We report the coexistence of -conformers and energetically unfavorable -conformers of 2,3-, 2,4-, 2,5-, and 2,6-difluorobenzaldehyde in the gas phase using broadband chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy. The rotational spectra of monosubstituted C isotopologues of the -conformers have also been assigned in natural abundance, which were used to derive their vibrationally averaged geometries and semi-experimental equilibrium structures. The energy differences between and conformations are estimated to be 10.

Electronic properties and vibrationally averaged structures of X̃ Σ MgOH: a computational molecular spectroscopy study.

For X̃ Σ MgOH, we have calculated the 3D potential energy surface (PES) at the MR-SDCI+/[cc-pCV5Z (Mg), aug-cc-pV5Z (O), cc-pV5Z (H)] level and derived the vibrational properties from there using the discrete variable representation (DVR) method. The PES minimum is at the linear structure; hence, MgOH is a "linear molecule." The 3D PES is shallow, and MgOH tends to bend in the region immediately when either or both Mg-O and O-H bonds become longer than those of the equilibrium structure ((Mg-O) = 1.

Vibrational relaxation of HOD by collisions with Ar atoms.

J Chem Phys

August 2024

Department of Chemistry, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas 66506, USA.

Vibrational relaxation of HOD(v12, v3) molecules by collisions with Ar was studied at 298 K (v12 denotes coupled bending, v2, and OD stretching, v1, vibrational modes and v3 denotes OH stretching mode). The vibrationally excited HOD molecules were generated by exothermic abstraction reactions of OD radicals with 13 different RH reactants and observed by infrared emission from a fast-flow reactor as a function of Ar pressure and reaction time. State-specific relaxation rate constants were obtained by comparison of the time evolution of the experimental vibrational distributions with numerical kinetic calculations for vibrational populations.

Self-adaptive rotational electromagnetic energy generation as an alternative to triboelectric and piezoelectric transductions.

Department of Mechanical Engineering and TEMA - Centre for Mechanical Technology & Automation, University of Aveiro, 3810-193, Aveiro, Portugal.

Triboelectric and piezoelectric energy harvesters can hardly power most microelectronic systems. Rotational electromagnetic harvesters are very promising alternatives, but their performance is highly dependent on the varying mechanical sources. This study presents an innovative approach to significantly increase the performance of rotational harvesters, based on dynamic coil switching strategies for optimization of the coil connection architecture during energy generation.
