In the presence of the uncoupler, external zinc ions inhibit rapidly turnover of cytochrome c oxidase reconstituted in phospholipid vesicles or bound to the membrane of intact mitochondria. The effect is promoted by electron leaks into the oxidase during preincubation with Zn(2+). Inhibition of liposome-bound bovine cytochrome oxidase by external Zn(2+) titrates with a K(i) of 1+/-0.3 microM. Presumably, the Zn(2+)-binding group at the positively charged side is not reactive in the oxidized enzyme, but becomes accessible to the cation in some partially reduced state(s) of the oxidase; reduction of Cu(B) is tentatively proposed to be responsible for the effect.

Background: The subfamily Phlebotominae comprises 1028 species of sand fly, of which only 90 are recognized as vectors of pathogenic agents such as Trypanosoma, Leishmania, and Bartonella. In Thailand, leishmaniasis-a sand fly-borne disease-is currently endemic, with 36 documented sand fly species. However, many cryptic species likely remain unidentified.

Karst caves, formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks, are characterized by the absence of photosynthetic activity and low levels of organic matter. Organisms evolve under these particular conditions, which causes high levels of endemic biodiversity in both macroorganism and microbes. Recent research has highlighted the presence of testate amoebae (Arcellinida) group in cave environments.

The nematode Spinitectus notopteri Karve et Naik, 1951 was collected from two species of freshwater fish belonging to the family Notopteridae, namely Chitala ornata (Gray) and Notopterus notopterus (Pallas), at Khun Thale Swamp in Surat Thani province of southern Thailand. The overall prevalence of the parasite was found to be 88% (94 fish infected/106 fish examined). A higher prevalence was found in C.

Neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders are complex conditions that arise from a variety of interacting genetic and environmental factors. Among these factors, altered serotonergic signalling and mitochondrial dysfunction are strongly implicated, with a growing body of evidence to suggesting that serotonergic signalling is an important regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis. The serotonin transporter (SERT) functions to regulate synaptic 5-HT, and human allelic variants of the serotonin reuptake transporter-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) are associated with reduced SERT expression and increased susceptibility for developing neuropsychiatric disorders.

A new genus and a new species of isosporoid coccidium (Apicomplexa: Conoidasida: Eimeriorina) are described and illustrated from green tree frogs () (Anura: Hylidae) imported from Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The described species has disporocystic and tetrasporozoic oocysts without a Stieda body. Nine species originally belonging to the genus Schneider, 1881 in the family Eimeriidae Minchin, 1903 described from Anura are recognized as members of the new genus and new combinations of the species names are proposed.
