Secretory IgA (sIgA) purified from colostrum and breast milk obtained from 14 women inhibited the localized adherence of an enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) to HEp-2 cells. Inhibition decreased as lactation continued even when the concentration of sIgA was maintained constant at 1 mg/ml. sIgA responded to a 94-kDa plasmid-encoded outer membrane protein implicated as the EPEC adherence factor. An oligosaccharide-enriched fraction (OEF) from these samples also inhibited the attachment of this EPEC. Inhibition by OEFs decreased as lactation continued because of a general reduction in oligosaccharide content. Localized adherence of six other EPEC was also inhibited by sIgA and OEF, whereas attachment of isolates with diffuse or aggregative adherence was not inhibited by these fractions. Experiments with purified oligosaccharide fractions revealed that EPEC attach to HEp-2 cells through a carbohydrate-mediated mechanism based on the preferential recognition of fucosylated residues in human milk.

serotype 2 ( type 2, SS2) is one of the zoonotic pathogens known to induce meningitis, septicemia, and arthritis in both pigs and humans, resulting in public health concerns. CbpD, also termed CrfP, is one of the choline-binding proteins (CBPs) that was found as a murein hydrolase in SS2 and plays crucial roles in natural genetic transformation under the control of ComRS-ComX regulatory system by a previous study. Nonetheless, the possible functions of CbpD in virulence and pathogenesis in SS2 remain unclear.

The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) matrix protein plays key roles in the virus life cycle and is essential for budding, as it stimulates the optimal membrane curvature necessary for the emergence of viral particles. Resveratrol, a polyphenol (3,4',5-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) produced by plants, exhibits pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory and antiviral activities. In this study, resveratrol was tested in HEp-2 (Epidermoid carcinoma of the larynx cell) cells for its post-infection effects, and recombinant M protein was produced to characterize the biophysical mechanisms underlying this interaction.

Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas are the seventh most common cancer accounting for 90 % of malignant neoplasia of the upper respiratory system. KRAS is a very important oncogene, leading to the suppression of apoptosis, and promoting the pathogenesis and development of tumors. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are highly conserved, small noncoding RNA molecules aberrantly expressed in various pathologies including regulation of tumor and metastasis-associated genes.

The Anti-Nuclear Antibodies (ANA) test using Human Epithelial type 2 (HEp-2) cells in the Indirect Immuno-Fluorescence (IIF) assay protocol is considered the gold standard for detecting Connective Tissue Diseases. Computer-assisted systems for HEp-2 image analysis represent a growing field that harnesses the potential offered by novel machine learning techniques to address the classification of HEp-2 images and ANA patterns. In this study, we introduce an innovative platform based on transfer learning with pre-trained deep learning models.

Anti-nuclear mitotic apparatus (NuMA) 1 antibodies are uncommonly detected in routine antinuclear antibody (ANA) screening. We present the case of a 65-year-old female with rheumatoid arthritis undergoing golimumab biotherapy who developed lupus-like symptoms including photosensitivity, fatigue, weakness, myalgias, alopecia, oral ulcers, and worsening of arthritis. Elevated serum levels of NuMA-1 antibodies were detected using indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) on HEp-2 cells with a titer of 1:1000, but no other ANA patterns were associated.
