AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to evaluate how effective Intradermal Provocation (IDP) tests are in diagnosing Fixed Drug Eruption (FDE) over a two-year period in a Lahore dermatology unit.
  • In the study, 96 patients underwent two test stages where intradermal and oral provocation tests were administered, observing changes at injection sites and FDE lesions.
  • Results showed that specific local signs were consistently present in both stages, indicating that IDP can reliably identify the drugs causing FDE, with no significant differences between the groups tested.

Article Abstract

Objective: To determine the role of Intradermal Provocation (IDP) tests in Fixed Drug Eruption (FDE).

Study Design: Quasi-experimental study.

Place And Duration Of Study: Dermatology Unit, Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore, from August 2004 to July 2006.

Methodology: The tests were performed in 96 patients in two stages. At stage I, suspected drugs were given intradermally. Changes at injection site in FDE lesions or any systemic effects were observed. In patients showing no response to IDP, Oral Provocation (OP) was performed (stage II) and its effects in FDE lesions or any systemic effect were observed. The positive response of FDE lesions after IDP and OP were compared with local changes at injection site. Control intradermal tests were repeated in normal persons with drugs and in FDE patients with distilled water on normal skin.

Results: At stage I, 46 positive cases had local signs of erythematous indurated nodule with or without hemorrhagic centre, urticarial weal with hemorrhagic centre and erythematous indurated nodule with central vesicle. At stage II, 41 patients had similar local signs. The changes at injection site to those of FDE lesions were compared. Z-test for proportions showed no significant difference between groups (p-value > 0.05). Control tests were negative.

Conclusion: The drug producing erythematous indurated nodule with or without hemorrhagic centre, vesicle or urticarial weal with hemorrhagic centre at injection site was the most likely drug causing fixed eruption.

Introduction And Hypothesis: This study was aimed at evaluating the therapeutic effects of a modified intravesical botulinum toxin injection technique (fewer injection sites under local anesthesia), in comparison with the conventional technique for patients with idiopathic detrusor overactivity, considering the urodynamic parameters.

Methods: In this double-blinded randomized clinical trial, 78 adult females with idiopathic detrusor overactivity were divided into two groups: conventional and modified groups. In the conventional method, patients received intradetrusor botulinum toxin injection at 20 sites under general or spinal anesthesia in a trigone-sparing fashion.

Insulin-secreting allogeneic cell therapies are a promising treatment for type 1 diabetes, with the potential to eliminate hypoglycemia and long-term complications of the disease. However, chronic systemic immunosuppression is necessary to prevent graft rejection, and the acute risks associated with immunosuppression limit the number of patients who can be treated with allogeneic cell therapies. Islet macroencapsulation in a hydrogel biomaterial is one proposed method to reduce or eliminate immune suppression; however, macroencapsulation devices suffer from poor oxygen transport and limited efficacy as they scale to large animal model preclinical studies and clinical trials.

Background: Delirium is a condition characterized by an acute and transient disturbance in attention, cognition, and consciousness. It is increasingly prevalent at the end of life in patients with cancer. While non-pharmacological nursing interventions are essential for delirium prevention, their effectiveness in terminally ill patients with cancer remains unclear.
