Macrodactyly is a rare congenital condition in which overgrowth of one or more digits is seen. In this article, we introduce two patients with macrodactyly simplex congenita for which we used segmental excision of the distal phalanx with sparing of neurovascular bundles, eliminating the need for a secondary operation.

To report the cosmetic, clinical, and visual outcomes of a combined surgical approach for treating a corneal/limbal dermoid using excision and a three-layered amniotic membrane graft with fibrin glue. An 18-year-old female presented with impaired vision and ocular discomfort caused by a prominent dome-shaped limbal congenital dermoid on the inferotemporal cornea, resulting in a significant aesthetic concern. A full assessment, including refraction, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), corneal topography, aberrometry and anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) was conducted to plan the surgical approach.

Oncological principles in the management of ocular surface squamous neoplasia - A Review.

Indian J Ophthalmol

February 2025

Ocular Oncology Service, Centre for Sight, Hyderabad, Telangana, India.

Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) is the most common neoplasia of the anterior segment. Accurate and timely diagnosis, including detailed clinical assessment and imaging, is essential to ascertain the extent of the disease. The gold standard treatment for OSSN has evolved over the years, transitioning from wide-margin surgical excision using the "no-touch" technique to topical immunotherapy, plaque brachytherapy, and targeted immunotherapy.

Purpose: Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), the most common subtype of non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC), is prevalent worldwide and poses significant challenges due to their increasing incidence and complex treatment considerations. Existing clinical approaches, such as Mohs micrographic surgery, are time-consuming and labour-intensive, requiring meticulous layer-by-layer excision and examination, which can significantly extend the duration of the procedure. Current optical imaging solutions also lack the necessary spatial resolution, penetration depth, and contrast for effective clinical use.

Mandibular Reconstruction With a Patient-Specific Implant Following Surgical Excision of an Acanthomatous Ameloblastoma in a Dog.

J Vet Dent

January 2025

Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery, Eastcott Veterinary Referrals, Part of Linnaeus Group, Swindon, UK.

Canine acanthomatous ameloblastoma (CAA) is an invasive benign epithelial odontogenic tumour most commonly affecting the mandible of large breed dogs. To the author's knowledge, this report describes the first computer-aided design patient-specific implant (PSI) that has been placed for a critical sized bone defect in mandibular reconstruction of a dog in the UK. The aim was to restore mandibular stability using a regenerative approach combining a titanium locking plate and compression-resistant matrix infused with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) to bridge the 85 mm mandibular defect created by a segmental mandibulectomy.

This study evaluated the efficacy of tubular constructs containing stem cells and Type I collagen, both independently and in conjunction with low-level laser therapy (LLLT), in repairing the sciatic nerve in a rat model. In this animal study, the right sciatic nerve of 30 male Wistar rats, each weighing 250-300 g, was surgically excised to a length of 8 mm. The rats were then randomly allocated to three groups (n = 10 per group).
