Background: The purpose of this study was to track the cost of antibiotic-impregnated bead chains and the outcome of treatment over a 30-month period occurring before USP Chapter 797 went into effect. Our overall objective was to determine whether the costs of antibiotic beads were justified by reduced rates of active infections associated with open fracture wounds or chronic osteomyelitis.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 125 patients with open fracture wounds (Group 1) and 16 patients with chronic osteomyelitis (Group 2) treated over a 2.5-year period. We reviewed the medical records and performed cost calculations for the beads. The minimum time from treatment to the latest follow-up evaluation was six weeks (average, 30.7 weeks; range, 6-134 weeks) for Group 1 and six months (average, 61.8 weeks; range, 24-156 weeks) for Group 2.

Results: The overall infection rates were 3.2% (96.8% free of active infection) for Group 1 and 25.0% (75.0% free of active infection) for Group 2. The average cost of antibiotic bead treatment per patient was $419.36 for Group 1 and $484.54 for Group 2.

Conclusions: The costs of antibiotic beads to prevent active infection of open fracture wounds or to treat active infection associated with chronic osteomyelitis are justified based on the cost structure prior to the impact of new federal regulations (USP Chapter 797 regulations). We anticipate that the cost of antibiotic beads will increase dramatically with these new regulations.

Ofloxacin is a commonly used quinolone antibiotic that is also used as a feed supplement in livestock production and in plant disease prevention and treatment. However, the excessive use and abuse of ofloxacin will accumulate along the food chain and endanger human health. Therefore, the development of a simple, rapid, and sensitive detection method for the determination of ofloxacin is critical.

The primary goal of the current work was to construct pH-sensitive nano and microcomposite hydrogel beads based on alginate (AL), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), biochar (BC), and two Moroccan clays: Ghassoul (swelling SW) and red (not swelling NSW) nano and microhybrid. The adsorbents, SW + AL, SW + AL + BC, SW + AL + CMC, NSW + AL, NSW + AL + BC, NSW + AL + CMC, AL, and AL + CMC were prepared for the adsorption of the antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ). The test samples were characterized using a variety of techniques, including X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), IR spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), with the molecular structures of the studied additives geometrically optimized using the DFT/B3LYP method and the function 6-311G(d).

Carbon dots (CDs) mediated g-CN (CN) is a promising visible-light-driven semiconductor in catalyzing peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for aqueous contaminants remediation. However, the poor dispersibility of powered catalyst and its challenging recyclability impede their broader application. Herein, we embedded FeN bridge within the g-CN framework and immobilized g-CN gel beads (CA/FNCCN) through a 3D cross-linking process with sodium alginate.

This study introduces an innovative bio-based sorbent bead crafted by integrating chitosan (CS) biopolymers, Fe(NO3)3 and polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs) via glutaraldehyde crosslinking. The primary focus of this study was the concurrent separation of diverse tetracycline antibiotics (TCs), followed by rigorous reversed-phase liquid chromatography analysis. The fabricated CS/Fe@PDA sorbent beads were comprehensively characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, revealing a surface rich in active carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and oxygen (O) moieties.

The impact of antioxidant-ciprofloxacin combinations on the evolution of antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms.

Costerton Biofilm Center, Department of Immunology and Microbiology, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, 2200, Denmark.

The evolution of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in biofilms, driven by mechanisms like oxidative stress, is a major challenge. This study investigates whether antioxidants (AOs) such as N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and Edaravone (ED) can reduce AMR in Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms exposed to sub-inhibitory concentrations of ciprofloxacin (CIP). In vitro experimental evolution studies were conducted using flow cells and glass beads biofilm models.
