Lateralization of the brain has traditionally been considered a specialization that is confined to the vertebrates, but recent studies have revealed that a range of invertebrates also have a brain that is structurally asymmetric and/or each side performs a different set of functions. Here, we show that the precopulatory mating behaviour of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis is lateralized. We present evidence that the asymmetry of the behaviour corresponds to the sinistral or dextral shell coil, or chirality, of the snail, and is apparently also controlled by a maternal effect locus. As sinistral snails also tend to have mirror image brains, these findings suggest that the lateralized sexual behaviour of L. stagnalis is set up early in development, and is a direct consequence of the asymmetry of the entire body.

During an intensive study of the urban population of the blackbird in Szczecin (1997-2023), four cases of surrogate copulation were observed in the blackbird and three in the fieldfare . In three cases, birds (blackbirds twice and fieldfare once) try to copulate with fledglings of their own species, and in all other cases, the birds try to copulate with moss and sticks. In three cases copulation, attempts were done by adult birds (two blackbirds and one fieldfare), and in four cases, it was a fledgling.

Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis Motschulsky), a wood borer (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) native to China, has been unintentionally and repeatedly introduced to North American and European landscapes as a stow-away in the wood packing material commonly used in international trade. Asian longhorned beetle causes extensive damage and mortality in multiple deciduous tree species and in response, countries in both North America and Europe have adopted policies of eradication. Models that integrate patterns of Asian longhorned beetle dispersal with records of infested trees are critical in optimizing survey and eradication efforts and tracking eradication progress.
