Surface x-ray diffraction has been employed to elucidate the surface structure of the (011)-(2 x 1) termination of rutile TiO2. The data are inconsistent with previously proposed structures. Instead, an entirely unanticipated geometry emerges from the structure determination, which is terminated by zigzag rows of twofold coordinated oxygen atoms asymmetrically bonded to fivefold titanium atoms. The energetic stability of this structure is demonstrated by ab initio total energy calculations.

The deposition of alkali metals on oxide surfaces has garnered significant interest due to their critical role in enhancing various catalytic processes. However, the atomic-scale characterization of these structures remains elusive, owing to the complex and competing interactions among the oxygen, the alkali metals, and the metal atoms within the oxides. In this work, we grew alkali metals (Na, K, Cs) on the copper oxide films on the Cu(111) surface and found the formation of hexagonally ordered monolayer films.

Human lens epithelial cells (hLECs) are critical for lens transparency, and their aberrant metabolic activity and gene expression can lead to cataract. Intracellular delivery to hLECs, especially to sub-cellular organelles (e.g.

The hydroxysilylene (HSiOH) molecule has been spectroscopically identified in the gas phase for the first time. This highly reactive species was produced in a twin electric discharge jet using separate precursor streams of 16O2/18O2 and Si2H6/Si2D6, both diluted in high pressure argon. The strongest and most stable laser induced fluorescence (LIF) signals were obtained by applying an electric discharge to each of the precursor streams and then merging the discharge products just prior to expansion into vacuum.

Acoustoplasmonic resonators, such as nanobars and crosses, are efficient acousto-optical transducers. The excitation of mechanical modes in these structures strongly depends on the spatial profile of the eigenmodes of the resonator. Using a system of two identical gold elongated bars placed on a silicon dioxide substrate, we examine how breaking mirror symmetries affects the optical and acoustic properties to provide insights in the design of acoustoplasmonic metasurfaces for nonsymmetric acousto-optical transducers.

The glycocalyx is a dense and dynamic layer of glycosylated species that covers every cell in the human body. It plays crucial roles in various cellular processes in health and disease, such as cancer immune evasion, cancer immune therapy, blastocyst implantation, and functional attenuation of membrane protein diffusion. In addition, alterations in glycocalyx structure may play an important role in ocular surface diseases, e.
