Purpose: The aim was to evaluate if morphine sulphate combined with cerebrolysin enhances the risk of oxidative damage in the presence of moderate hypoglycaemia.
Methods: Wistar rats under starvation for 48h received a single dose of 215 mg/kg cerebrolysin or 4 mg/kg morphine sulphate. Glutathione (GSH) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) levels were measured in brain tissue, as well as lipid peroxidation, Na(+)-K(+) ATPase and total ATPase enzymatic activities, by fluorescence and spectrophotometric methods.
Results: GSH and 5-HIAA levels decreased significantly (p<0.05) in animals which received cerebrolysin and morphine alone or combined. TBARS levels increased in all groups, but the values were statistically significant only in those animals that received cerebrolysin combined with morphine (p<0.05). Na(+)-K(+) ATPase and total ATPase activities decreased significantly in rats treated only with morphine, but the cerebrolysin and morphine groups showed a significant increase in these enzymatic activities.
Conclusions: Results suggest that cerebrolysin as well as morphine induced changes in cellular regulation and biochemical responses to oxidative stress induced by moderate hypoglycaemia in brain.

Unlabelled: It is currently estimated that every 15 minutes an infant is born with opioid use disorder and undergoes intense early life trauma due to opioid withdrawal. Clinical research on the long-term consequences of gestational opioid exposure reports increased rates of social, conduct, and emotional disorders in these children. Here, we investigate the impact of perinatal opioid exposure (POE) on behaviors associated with anhedonia and stress in male and female Sprague Dawley rats.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to quantify analgesic use following alveolar cleft bone grafting (ABG) utilizing a posterior iliac crest (PIC) donor site.
Design: This is a prospective cohort study of consecutive patients that underwent ABG with PIC in a 10 month period from November 2022 to September 2023.
Setting: Tertiary care free-standing pediatric hospital.

Aims: Communication within glial cells acts as a pivotal intermediary factor in modulating neuroimmune pathology. Meanwhile, an increasing awareness has emerged regarding the detrimental role of glial cells and neuroinflammation in morphine tolerance (MT). This study investigated the influence of crosstalk between astrocyte and microglia on the evolution of morphine tolerance.

Background: Nearly 25% of opioid-related deaths are from prescribed opioids, and the exacerbation of the opioid epidemic by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic underscores the urgent need to address superfluous prescribing. Therefore, we sought to align local opioid prescribing practices with national guidelines in postoperative non-metastatic breast cancer patients.
Methods: A single-institution analysis included non-metastatic breast surgery patients treated between April 2020 and July 2021.

The therapeutic benefits of opioids are compromised by the development of analgesic tolerance, which necessitates higher dosing for pain management thereby increasing the liability for drug dependence and addiction. Rodent models indicate opposing roles of the gut microbiota in tolerance: morphine-induced gut dysbiosis exacerbates tolerance, whereas probiotics ameliorate tolerance. Not all individuals develop tolerance, which could be influenced by differences in microbiota, and yet no study design has capitalized upon this natural variation.
