Chronic exposure to n-hexane is one of the well known causes of peripheral neuropathy. This type of neuropathy is commonly seen among individuals employed in shoe and bag factories with inadequate ventilation. We describe three patients with acute and sub-acute neuropathy following n-hexane exposure via inhalation of glue. All of the patients had history of working in the same place. The results of laboratory examinations were in normal ranges except the electroneuromyographic (ENMG) findings which were showing the neuropathy. All patients were hospitalized and rehabilitation programs were carried out. Symptomatic relief was achieved following this treatment, however the pathologic ENMG findings still persisted.

Pyrrole adducts mediated mitochondrial dysfunction activates SARM1-dependent axon degeneration in 2,5-hexanedione-induced neuropathy.

2,5-hexanedione (HD) is the γ-diketone metabolite of industrial organic solvent n-hexane, primarily responsible for n-hexane neurotoxicity. Previous studies have shown that the formation of pyrrole adducts (PAs) is crucial for the toxic axonopathy induced by HD. However, the exact mechanism underlying PAs-induced axonal degeneration remains unclear.

N-Hexane is a solvent widely used in manufacturing as a cleaner, degreaser and component of rubber cement. Chronic exposure to -hexane either through contact with unprotected skin or inhalation can lead to the development of clinical symptoms and electrophysiological changes similar to those of inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy which requires careful differential diagnosis. This article presents three cases of severe predominantly motor polyneuropathy with demyelinating features in 15- and 16-year-old adolescents.

Hexane is a widely used organic solvent in industry, and chronic hexane poisoning is the main occupational toxic lesion in China. In particular, axonal and myelin lesions in the distal thick fibers of the peripheral nervous system may be caused by 2, 5-hexanedione (2, 5-HD), an intermediate metabolite of n-hexane in humans. Hexane has toxic effects not only on the nervous system but also on the liver, kidneys, and reproductive organs.

Echinacea purpurea against neuropathic pain: Alkamides versus polyphenols efficacy.

Phytother Res

Research and Innovation Center in Phytotherapy and Integrated Medicine (CERFIT), Referring Center for Phytotherapy, Tuscany Region, Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy.

Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy represents the main dose-limiting toxicity of several anticancer drugs, such as oxaliplatin, leading to chronic pain and an impairment of the quality of life. Echinacea purpurea n-hexane extract (EP -R ; rich in alkamides) and butanolic extract (EP -R ; rich in polyphenols) have been characterized and tested in an in vivo model of oxaliplatin-induced neuropathic pain, addressing the endocannabinoid system with alkamides and counteracting the redox imbalance with polyphenols. Thermal hypersensitivity was evaluated by the Cold Plate test.
