We have developed low-valent titanium-mediated 1,3-transpositive cross-coupling reactions of acyclic and cyclic allylic alcohols for the stereoselective introduction of ethyl, 2-silylethyl, 2-phenethyl, and alkenyl groups. Cross-coupling of an allylic alcohol with a vinylsilane or styrene derivative is particularly noteworthy, as an efficient cross-selective coupling of two alkenes has been elusive. The stereochemistry of the cross-coupling alkylation is consistent with syn addition/beta-elimination.

Ti-mediated homolytic C-O bond cleavage was useful for cascade radical-ionic reactions. Benzyl alcohols treated with TiCl(col) (col = 2,4,6-collidine) and Mn powder generated the corresponding benzyl radicals; in addition, their reaction with 2-carboxyallyl acetates and the subsequent elimination of the acetoxy group yielded α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with exclusive ()-stereoselectivity. The simplicity of the procedure and its wide substrate scope represent a solution to the drawbacks associated with the reactions.

Direct and Unified Access to Carbon Radicals from Aliphatic Alcohols by Cost-Efficient Titanium-Mediated Homolytic C-OH Bond Cleavage.

Low-valent Ti-mediated homolytic C-O bond cleavage offers unified access to carbon radicals from ubiquitous non-activated tertiary, secondary, and even primary alcohols. In contrast to the representative Ti reagents, which were ineffective for this purpose, "TiCl (cat)"/Zn (cat=catecholate) was found to be specifically active. This method was applied to the addition reactions of radicals to alkenes and exhibited high generality and yields.

The Titanium-Mediated Double Reductive Cleavage of Cyclic Sulfonamides for the Synthesis of Aryl Pyrrolidines.

Reduction of a range of benzo-fused cyclic sulfonamides has been accomplished using low-valent titanium. This operationally simple method generates the corresponding aryl-substituted cyclic amines, typically, with good conversion. Notably, unlike our previous Li-NH-based method, loss of heteroatom-based substituents (X) on the aromatic ring does not readily occur, and the robustness of this method was demonstrated with a synthesis of the Sceletium alkaloid mesembrane.

Low-Valent Titanium-Mediated Radical Conjugate Addition Using Benzyl Alcohols as Benzyl Radical Sources.

Division of Material Chemistry, Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology , Kanazawa University, Kakuma, Kanazawa, Ishikawa 920-1192 , Japan.

A concise method to directly generate benzyl radicals from benzyl alcohol derivatives has been developed. The simple and inexpensive combination of TiCl(collidine) (collidine = 2,4,6-collidine) and manganese powder afforded a low-valent titanium reagent, which facilitated homolytic cleavage of benzylic C-OH bonds. The application to radical conjugate addition reactions demonstrated the broad scope of this method.

The titanium mediated trimerization of pyrazine leads to the formation of a tris-chelate complex employing a 4a,4b,8a,8b,12a,12b-hexahydrodiyprazino[2,3-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline ligand (HATH6, 3). The driving force in the formation of the (Cp*2Ti)3(HATH6) complex 2 is attributed to the formation of six Ti-N bonds. We show that density functional theory (DFT) fails to predict quantitatively correct results.
