trans-1,2-Bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe), containing a C=C bond, has been extensively studied for solid-state photochemical [2+2] cycloaddition reactions, in discrete molecular and metal complexes, hydrogen bonded and coordination polymeric structures. The challenges in orienting a pair or more of bpe molecules in the solid-state using crystal engineering principles, and their photochemical behaviour and implications, based on Schmidt's postulates, are discussed.

Nitrate-Photolysis Shortens the Lifetimes of Brown Carbon Tracers from Biomass Burning.

Environ Sci Technol

December 2024

State Ecology and Environment Scientific Observation and Research Station for the Yangtze River Delta at Dianshan Lake, Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, Shanghai 200030, China.

Biomass burning is an important source of brown carbon (BrC) aerosols, which influence climate by affecting the Earth's radiative balance. However, the transformation pathways of BrC chromophores, especially in the presence of photochemically active species, such as nitrate, are not well understood. In this study, the nitrate-mediated aqueous-phase photooxidation of three typical BrC chromophores from biomass burning was investigated, including 4-nitrocatechol, 3-nitrosalicylic acid, and 3,4-dinitrophenol.

We present a six-step cascade that converts 1,3-distyrylbenzenes (-stilbenes) into nonsymmetric pyrenes in 40-60% yields. This sequence merges photochemical steps, ,-alkene isomerization, a 6π photochemical electrocyclization (Mallory photocyclization); the new bay region cyclization, with two radical iodine-mediated aromatization steps; and an optional aryl migration. This work illustrates how the inherent challenges of engineering excited state reactivity can be addressed by logical design.

[Effect of exogenous paclobutrazol on the drought resistance of seedlings under drought stress].

Hunan Academy of Forestry, Changsha 410004, China.

To clarify the response mechanism of exogenous paclobutrazol on drought resistance in seedlings, we investigated the effects of spraying different concentrations of paclobutrazol (25, 50, 100 mg·L) on the photosynthetic and antioxidant systems of 2-year-old seedlings under drought stress using natural drought method. The results showed that drought stress significantly reduced the photosynthesis and broke the dynamic balance of antioxidant system in seedlings. Spraying with different concentrations of paclobutrazol effectively alleviated the negative impacts of drought stress, and enhanced the defense capability of photosynthetic and antioxidant systems, with the 100 mg·L paclobutrazol treatment being the most effective.

Enhanced oxidative potential and SO heterogeneous oxidation on candle soot after photochemical aging: Influencing mechanisms of different irradiation wavelengths.

Environ Pollut

December 2024

School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Changzhou University, Changzhou 213164, People's Republic of China; Key Laboratory of Advanced Plasma Catalysis Engineering for China Petrochemical Industry, Jiangsu 213164, China. Electronic address:

Photochemistry plays a significant role in the atmospheric aging processes of soot. However, the physicochemical properties and changes in environmental and health effects of soot particles from sacrificial sources after photochemical aging remain unclear. The reaction mechanisms of soot under different irradiation wavelengths require further investigation.

Regulating (ecosystem) services of an urban natural area: a case study in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Instituto de Química, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, 21941-909, Brazil. Electronic address:

Peri-urban conserved natural or semi-natural areas provide several ecosystem services and assist in reducing air pollution in cities. The aim of this study is to assess the contribution to the improvement of air quality of a small area (<1 km) adjacent to a city in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), which is seriously affected by vehicular and industrial emissions of pollutants. Hydrocarbon (HC) and carbonyl compounds (CC) levels were determined, by employing TO-15 and TO-11A US EPA Methods, respectively, in both the urban and green areas.
