Selecting an embryo with the highest probability of achieving a pregnancy is a major challenge. Early-cleavage embryos are considered to be of good quality; however, the exact developmental stage that predicts further development has not been defined. The aim of the study was to characterize cleavage rate and distribution of various stages of mouse preimplantation embryos using a time-lapse system. Mated mice were killed 20 h after human chorionic gonadotrophin administration and putative zygotes were recovered and cultured in an incubator-enclosed time-lapse imaging system. The 'shortest half' analysis was used to establish the period in which at least 50% of the embryonic population cleaved within the shortest time. Analysis indicated that through embryonic development, cleavage timing becomes less uniform and the 'shortest half' becomes longer with intervals of 2, 2.5, 3.5 and 5 h for 2-, 4-, 8-cell embryo and blastocyst stages, respectively. The 'shortest half' for the first cleavage was closely synchronized, with 80% of embryos developing to the blastocyst stage. Moreover, slow-cleaving embryos approaching the 2-cell stage expressed inferior developmental potential in comparison to those cleaving within the 'shortest half'. Thus, embryonic cleavage rate seems to be a biological indicator of developmental potential and may be useful for embryo selection.

Developing materials capable of rapidly decontaminating nerve and blister agents directly under ambient conditions are crucial for practical applications. In this work, MgAl Zr-LDH with different Zr doping contents and corresponding OH intercalated materials MgAl Zr-LDH-OH are synthesized. First, they are used for the decontamination of nerve agents under ambient conditions, showing that increasing the Zr doping amount accelerates the decontamination rate of diethyl cyanophosphonate (DECP) and soman (GD), with the half-life of DECP and GD being 3-5 times shorter with MgAlZr-LDH (the highest Zr doping content) compared to MgAl-LDH.

Conventional optical microscopy imaging of obligate intracellular bacteria is hampered by the small size of bacterial cells, tight clustering exhibited by some bacterial species and challenges relating to labelling such as background from host cells, a lack of validated reagents, and a lack of tools for genetic manipulation. In this study, we imaged intracellular bacteria from the species Orientia tsutsugamushi (Ot) using five different fluorescence microscopy techniques: standard confocal, Airyscan confocal, instant Structured Illumination Microscopy (iSIM), three-dimensional Structured Illumination Microscopy (3D-SIM) and Stimulated Emission Depletion Microscopy (STED). We compared the ability of each to resolve bacterial cells in intracellular clumps in the lateral (xy) axis, using full width half-maximum (FWHM) measurements of a labelled outer membrane protein (ScaA) and the ability to detect small, outer membrane vesicles external to the cells.

In this study, 10 randomly selected heterogeneous soil samples, each with distinct characteristics, were subjected to sorption trials as well as disintegration tests using biodegradation, hydrolysis, and photolysis.
