Metarhizium fight club: Within-host competitive exclusion and resource partitioning.

PLoS Pathog

November 2024

Department of Entomology, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, United States of America.

Both Metarhizium robertsii ARSEF 2575 (Mr2575) and Metarhizium anisopliae ARSEF 549 (Ma549) infect a range of insects whilst also interacting with plants; however, little is known about the traits that affect the competitive ability of different strains. We examined the interactions between Mr2575 and Ma549 in culture and during co-infection of plants (Arabidopsis thaliana) and insects. Mr2575 outcompetes Ma549 under nutrient-limiting conditions, including root exudates, giving it a priority advantage on Arabidopsis roots.

SpacerPlacer: ancestral reconstruction of CRISPR arrays reveals the evolutionary dynamics of spacer deletions.

Nucleic Acids Res

October 2024

Cluster of Excellence 'Controlling Microbes to Fight Infections', Mathematical and Computational Population Genetics, University of Tübingen, 72076 Tübingen, Germany.

Bacteria employ CRISPR-Cas systems for defense by integrating invader-derived sequences, termed spacers, into the CRISPR array, which constitutes an immunity memory. While spacer deletions occur randomly across the array, newly acquired spacers are predominantly integrated at the leader end. Consequently, spacer arrays can be used to derive the chronology of spacer insertions.

[Lacrimal system trauma].

J Fr Ophtalmol

March 2024

GHSA de Rethel, France.

Among lacrimal system injuries, canalicular lacerations are at the top of the list. Men are more affected than women, but children are most likely to experience such trauma. The cause depends on the patient's age: in young children, there is a higher prevalence of animal bites (dogs and cats); in young adults, fights predominate, since motor vehicle accidents have become less common; in the elderly, falls are among the most frequent causes.

Circular RNA: A promising new star of vaccine.

J Transl Int Med

State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangzhou 510060, Guangdong Province, China.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of single-stranded RNAs with covalently closed structures. Owing to their not having 3' or 5' ends, circRNAs are highly durable and insusceptible to exonuclease-mediated degradation. Moreover, some circRNAs with certain structures are translatable, making them novel vaccines.

November 2023

Department of Endocrinology, the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, People's Republic of China.

The fight against aging is an eternal pursuit of humankind. The aging rate of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is higher than that of healthy individuals. Reducing the aging rate of patients with T2DM and extending their life expectancy are challenges that endocrinologists are eager to overcome.
