Granular cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon benign neoplasm of soft tissue that characteristically affects the oral cavity, with increased frequency in the tongue. In this paper, we report a multicentric GCT affecting a 41-year-old black woman, with nodules in perineum, groin, vulva, tongue and lip. Some of these lesions were surgically resected, but in a six-year follow-up, new primary lesions and recurrences were observed. In addition, the patient opted to do not remove some of these lesions, but there were not significant intercurrences. In view of the present findings, aspects related to clinical presentation, multiplicity, malignant potential, and treatment of GCT are discussed.

Unlabelled: All eukaryotes utilize regulated secretion to release molecular signals packaged in secretory granules for local and remote signaling. An anion shunt conductance was first suggested in secretory granules of bovine chromaffin cells nearly five decades ago. Biochemical identity of this conductance remains undefined.

Background: Considering the significant participation of the microenvironment in the local aggressiveness of odontogenic keratocysts, this study aims to evaluate the expression of ADAMTS-1 and its substrates, versican, aggrecan and brevican in this locally invasive odontogenic cyst.

Methods: Immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were conducted on 30 cases of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and 20 dental follicles (DFs).

Results: The immunohistochemical expression of these proteins was predominantly cytoplasmic and granular across all samples.

Oncocytic Carcinoma Ex-Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Lacrimal Gland.

Adnexal Service, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London EC1V 2PD, United Kingdom.

Oncocytic carcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of oncocytic cells, such cells being characterized by abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm, invasive growth, and pronounced cellular pleomorphism. It may arise de novo, or through malignant transformation of a pre-existing benign oncocytoma. Oncocytic carcinoma most commonly occurs in the salivary glands, with rare involvement of the ocular adnexa where it mainly affects caruncle, conjunctiva, and lacrimal sac, and only very arises in the lacrimal gland.

Background: Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is one of the most common inherited cerebral small vessel diseases caused by the NOTCH3 gene mutation. This mutation leads to the accumulation of NOTCH3 extracellular domain protein (NOTCH3) into the cerebral arterioles, causing recurrent stroke, white matter lesions, and cognitive impairment. With the development of gene sequencing technology, cysteine-sparing mutations can also cause CADASIL disease, however, the pathogenicity and pathogenic mechanisms of cysteine-sparing mutations remain controversial.

Microbial fuel cells to monitor natural attenuation around groundwater plumes.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

January 2025

School of Natural and Built Environment, Queen's University Belfast, Belfast, Northern Ireland, BT7 1NN, UK.

This research presents a straightforward and economically efficient design for a microbial fuel cell (MFC) that can be conveniently integrated into a borehole to monitor natural attenuation in groundwater. The design employs conventional, transparent, and reusable PVC bailers with graphite tape and granular activated carbon to create high surface area electrodes. These electrodes are connected across redox environments in nested boreholes through a wire and variable resistor setup.
