In this study a kinetic fluorimetric method for the determination of folinic acid (leucovorin, LV) in human urine has been developed. The fluorescence emission generated by the oxidation reaction between LV and potassium permanganate in alkaline medium has been monitored at 360nm (excitation wavelength 290nm). The effect of instrumental and experimental variables on the reaction was investigated and a 0.17M sodium hydroxide, 3.3x10(-5)M KMnO(4) concentration and a temperature of 70 degrees C were selected for the reaction. The concentration range has been optimized between 10 and 700ngml(-1) of LV. The correlation coefficient was 0.9989. The sensitivity of the proposed method is 9.5ngml(-1) (expressed as limit of detection in accordance with the Clayton criterion). The determination time per sample is smaller than 200s. The proposed kinetic fluorimetric method has been applied to the direct determination of this compound in human urine. Recovery values from urine samples, containing LV, range from 82 to 110% (mean 96%).

Four functionalized BODIPY derivatives (BDP1 to BDP4) were synthesized and their optical properties investigated both in solution and when incorporated into a solid matrix. Recognizing the versatility of BODIPY derivatives and the increasing interest in developing new luminescent organic dyes embedded in polymers, the BODIPY derivatives were dispersed into two types of polymeric matrices: Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), both as films and microparticles. This resulted in eight new BODIPY-doped polymer films and eight types of BODIPY-doped polymeric microparticles for use in aqueous solutions.

The injury-triggered reocclusion (restenosis) of arteries treated with angioplasty to relieve atherosclerotic obstruction remains a challenge due to limitations of existing therapies. A combination of magnetic guidance and affinity-mediated arterial binding can pave the way to a new approach for treating restenosis by enabling efficient site-specific localization of therapeutic agents formulated in magnetizable nanoparticles (MNPs) and by maintaining their presence at the site of arterial injury throughout the vulnerability period of the disease. In these studies, we investigated a dual-targeted antirestenotic strategy using drug-loaded biodegradable MNPs, surface-modified with a fibrin-avid peptide to provide affinity for the injured arterial wall.

A fluorimetric sensor for dual and sensitive detection of Cd ion and Cysteine (based on 2-picolylamine platform) was developed. The sensor was designed and synthesized by simple condensation method and characterized by using common spectroscopic methods. The observations made from the kinetics of absorption and emission profile shows that probe Pdac behaves as ''ON-OFF'' fluorescent quenching sensor for cadmium ions.

We report herein a fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer (FMIP) for the solid-phase extraction (SPE) and fluorimetric determination of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) in water. The FMIP is based on fluorescent polystyrene nanoparticles embedded within a molecularly imprinted polyaniline (PANI) matrix. The operational adsorption parameters such as the initial HCTZ concentration, incubation time and the solution pH were found to influence the removal efficiency.
