Aims: To determine the prevalence of abnormal lipid levels in a large group of children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes and to examine the changes longitudinally. In addition, to study the relationships of any lipid abnormalities to glycaemic control, age and duration of diabetes.
Methods: Non-fasting blood samples were taken annually from all the patients in the Oxford Children's diabetes clinic and total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides (TG) and glycated haemoglobin (HbA(1c)) measured over a period of 8 years. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and non-HDL were calculated from these values and compared. Tests performed less than 4 months after diagnosis were excluded.
Results: A total of 229 children had complete data from more than 1 year and 798 sets of data were examined. TC was lower in males and increased with duration of diabetes and with increasing HbA(1c). HDL cholesterol fell with increasing age, but independently increased with duration, and was not related to HbA(1c). LDL cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol were highly correlated (r = 0.9). Both were lower in males and increased with duration of diabetes. Non-HDL cholesterol increased with HbA(1c). A total of 23.7% had HDL cholesterol < 1.1 mmol/l and 22.5% had TC > 5.2 mmol/l. Thirty-eight per cent had LDL cholesterol > 2.6 mmol/l and 10.8% > 3.4 mmol/l, the thresholds for lifestyle and drug intervention respectively.
Conclusions: Abnormalities in plasma lipid levels are common in this age group and the prevalence increases with poor glycaemic control and with duration of diabetes. Around 10% of adolescents would fit criteria for lipid-lowering medication in adults, but further study is needed to examine the risks and benefits in this age group.

Purpose: To study the potential of a candidate probiotic strain belonging to the Enterococcus durans species in alleviating hypercholesterolemia and improving the microbial milieu of rat gut.
Methods: A previously isolated and characterized E. durans strain NPL 1334 was further screened in vitro for its bile salt hydrolyzation and cholesterol assimilation ability.

Sarcopenia is an age-related muscle senescence disease that leads to functional limitations, physical disability and premature death in older adults. Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is a novel indicator of atherosclerotic status based on triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between AIP and new-onset sarcopenia and its components among middle-aged and older adults in a Chinese community.

Objectives: overweight and other cardiovascular risk factors are known contributors to disability accrual in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We aimed to explore the impact of three hypocaloric dietetic patterns, based on the Mediterranean diet, on cardiovascular risk and clinical status in overweight persons with MS (pwMS).
Material And Methods: overweight pwMS (body mass index-BMI ≥25 kg/m) were prospectively enrolled, randomly allocated to three hypocaloric dietetic plans differing in macronutrients composition (carbohydrates/proteins/lipids: diet A 65 %/15 %/20 %; diet B 35 %/25 %/40 %; diet C 50 %/20 %/30 %) and followed-up for 1 year (6 months of dietetic intervention + 6 months of observation).

Aging populations are susceptible to climate change due to physiological factors and comorbidities. Most relevant studies reported the effect of temperature on cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related mortality in aging populations. However, the combined effects of temperature and humidity on CVD-related mortality remain unclear.

Objective: To analyze the relationship between platelet parameters, morning peak blood pressure (MPBP) in hypertensive patients, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphisms.
Methods: This study included 245 primary hypertensive patients treated between February 2019 and February 2022, who were divided into two groups based on MPBP status: 144 patients with MPBP and 101 without MPBP. Baseline data and early morning fasting blood samples from the antecubital vein were collected.
