Australia's population is aging. Recent figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicate that by the year 2013, 3.1 million people will be over the age of 65 as compared with 2.1 million in 1993. This trend is projected to continue well into the 21st century, and has important implications for health and fitness professionals. Age related decline in muscle power predicts falls, motor impairment and disability. The author suggests that training programs should be tailored to maximise muscle power. Explosive heavy resistance training is safe and well tolerated in healthy adults even in the eighth decade of life and elicits adaptive neuromuscular changes in physiological variables that are commonly associated with the risk of falls and disability in aged individuals.

A 78-years-old man was treated for asthma and pansinusitis for >5 years, and mepolizumab was initiated two years previously. Two months after the cessation of mepolizumab treatment, the asthma symptoms worsened and acute progressive muscle weakness and sensory disturbance developed. On day 8 after the onset of weakness and hypoesthesia, the patient presented with complete flaccid tetraplegia and diffuse hypoesthesia of all extremities, without paresthesia or pain, and was admitted to our hospital.

Repeated use of nitroglycerin results in a loss of its vasodilatory efficacy which limits its clinical use for the treatment of angina pectoris. This tolerance phenomenon is a defining characteristic of all compounds classified as nitrodilators, which includes NTG as well as S-nitrosothiols and dinitrosyl iron complexes. These compounds vasodilate via activation of soluble guanylate cyclase, although they do not release requisite amounts of free nitric oxide (NO) and some do not even cross the plasma membrane.
