Background: Previous reports describe 30-40% of small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP), SIBO is a cause of persistent symptoms in this group of patients even when they are treated with pancreatic enzymes.

Aim: To asses the frequency of SIBO in patients with CP.

Patients And Methods: We studied 14 patients with CP using an hydrogen breath test with lactulose to detect SIBO, a nonabsorbable carbohydrate, whose results are not influenced by the presence of exocrine insufficiency. Main symptoms and signs were bloating in 9 (64%), recurrent abdominal pain in 8 (57%), intermittent diarrhea in 5 (36%) and steatorrhea in 5 (36%). At the same time we studied a healthy control group paired by age and sex.

Results: SIBO was present in 13 of 14 patients with CP (92%) and in 1 of 14 controls (p<0.001). The only patient with CP and without SIBO was recently diagnosed and had minimal morphologic alterations in computed tomography and endoscopic pancreatography.

Conclusions: SIBO is common in CP and may be responsible for persistent symptoms. Proper diagnosis and treatment could alleviate symptoms and improve quality of Ufe.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the relationship between small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), stressing the potential benefits of diet therapy.
  • A literature review suggests that SIBO is commonly associated with IBS and shares symptoms like abdominal pain and bloating, implying potential overlaps between these conditions.
  • Increasing evidence links SIBO with IBD, particularly in Crohn's disease, highlighting the need for comprehensive treatment approaches that combine medication, psychotherapy, probiotics, and tailored dietary plans.

Unlabelled: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), characterized by alterations in both the type and quantity of bacteria in the small intestine, leads to impaired intestinal digestion and absorption that can cause a range of clinical symptoms. Recent studies have identified significant changes in the composition of the small intestinal microbiota and metabolomic profiles of patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This study systematically reviewed and synthesized the available data to explore the association between SIBO and MASLD.

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms are associated with diverse pathophysiological mechanisms including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and food intolerance. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth leads to the decreased activity of several digestive enzymes, including lactase.

Aims: To assess the efficacy of rifaximin-alpha on the symptoms and lactase activity of patients with irritable bowel syndrome without constipation.

Metabolic bariatric surgery is considered the most effective treatment for severe obesity, however it may be associated with the development of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and other gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS). This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of probiotics or synbiotics on GIS and SIBO in post- metabolic bariatric surgery patients. Five studies that investigated the effect of probiotics or synbiotics in the treatment of post-surgery GIS were included in the review, with three focusing on SIBO.
