ABSTRACT Tomato yellow leaf curl (TYLC) is one of the most devastating pathogens affecting tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) worldwide. The disease is caused by a complex of begomovirus species, two of which, Tomato yellow leaf curl Sardinia virus (TYLCSV) and Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), are responsible for epidemics in Southern Spain. TYLCV also has been reported to cause severe damage to common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) crops. Pepper (Capsicum annuum) plants collected from commercial crops were found to be infected by isolates of two TYLCV strains: TYLCV-Mld[ES01/99], an isolate of the mild strain similar to other TYLCVs isolated from tomato crops in Spain, and TYLCV-[Alm], an isolate of the more virulent TYLCV type strain, not previously reported in the Iberian Peninsula. In this work, pepper, Nicotiana benthamiana, common bean, and tomato were tested for susceptibility to TYLCV-Mld[ES01/99]and TYLCV-[Alm] by Agrobacterium tumefaciens infiltration, biolistic bombardment, or Bemisia tabaci inoculation. Results indicate that both strains are able to infect plants of these species, including pepper. This is the first time that infection of pepper plants with TYLCV clones has been shown. Implications of pepper infection for the epidemiology of TYLCV are discussed.

Two phylogenetically unrelated viruses transmitted by different insect vectors, tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), are major threats to tomato and other vegetable production. Although co-infections of TSWV and TYLCV on the same host plant have been reported on numerous occasions, there is still lack of research attempting to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the relationship between two viruses when they coexist in the same tomato or other plants. After assessing the effect of four TSWV-coded proteins on suppressing TYLCV in TSWV N transgenic Nicotiana benthamiana seedlings, the TSWV N protein proved to be effective in reducing TYLCV quantity and viral symptoms.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus-Oman (TYLCV-OM), a variant of the Tomato yellow leaf curl virus-Iran (TYLCV-IR) strain, was identified in 2005 as the cause of tomato yellow leaf curl disease (TYLCD) in Oman and is associated with a betasatellite namely as Tomato leaf curl betasatellite (ToLCB). Surveys were carried out from three diverse Governorates of Oman to investigate the correlation between the betasatellite and the virus. The visual assessment and scoring of infected tomato plants in the field revealed that the association of betasatellite with the disease was highest in Sharqia at 77%, followed by Dakhlia at41% and lowest in Batinah at30% .

Background: Vector-borne viruses often manipulate plant defenses against insect vectors, thereby impacting vector population dynamics and in turn virus spread. However, the factors regulating the outcome of insect vector-virus-plant tripartite interactions, such as the feature of virus-vector combinations, are understudied.
Results: Using eight whitefly (Bemisia tabaci)-begomovirus combinations exhibiting different degrees of competence, namely virus transmission efficiency, we examined the association between whitefly-begomovirus competence and plant-mediated mutualism.

A comprehensive analysis of the volatile components of 11 different cherry tomato pastes (Tesco Extra, Orange, Zebra, Yellow, Round Netherland, Mini San Marzano, Spar truss, Tesco Sunstream, Paprikakertész, Mc Dreamy, and Tesco Eat Fresh) commercially available in Hungary was performed. In order to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the measurement, the optimal measurement conditions were first determined. SPME (solid-phase microextraction) fiber coating, cherry tomato paste treatment, and SPME sampling time and temperature were optimized.
