The author draws attention to the Czech physician J.J. Mastalir, who founded at the end of the 18th century in Vienna a surgery for poor sick children, one of the first ones in Europe. His work is briefly compared with that of the Prague obstetrician Dr. J. Melic who worked during the same period along similar lines in Prague.
