This study introduces a novel analytical framework for investigating the vibration characteristics of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) elliptical cylindrical shells under arbitrary boundary conditions. Unlike previous studies that focused on simplified geometries or specific boundary conditions, this work combines the least-squares weighted residual method (LSWRM) with an adapted variational principle, addressing high-order vibration errors and ensuring continuity across structural segments. The material properties are modeled using an extended rule of mixtures, capturing the effects of carbon nanotube volume fractions and distribution types on structural dynamics.

Peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) present substantial challenges due to variability in injury severity and limited regenerative capabilities. Historically, PNI research has focussed on measures such as subjective surgeon outcome grading, two-point discrimination (2PD) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) grading system. While these methods have use, there are also limitations related to subjectivity and sensitivity.

Mode-cleaning in antisymmetrically modulated non-Hermitian waveguides.

Nanophotonics

March 2024

Department de Fisica, Universitat Politecnica Catalunya, Rambla Sant Nebridi 22, 08222, Terrassa, Barcelona, Spain.

We demonstrate all-optical spatial mode-cleaning in non-Hermitian waveguides. The effect is accounted by a unidirectional coupling among the modes resulting from a simultaneous modulation of the refractive index and the gain/loss along graded index multimodal waveguides. Depending on the spatial delay between the real and imaginary part of the potential modulation, higher or lower order modes are favored, which in latter case eventually leads to an nearly-monomode propagation.

Introduction: Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent malignant tumors globally, posing a severe threat to human life and health. Chemotherapy, a cornerstone in the treatment of breast cancer, often overlooks the sequence of drug administration within single-day regimens. This study aims to explore the impact of drug administration order on the efficacy and toxicity of combination chemotherapy protocols for breast cancer.

When is prostate cancer really cancer?

J Natl Cancer Inst

October 2024

Section of Urology, Department of Surgery, University of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA.

Prostate cancer (PC) is a major cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with far more diagnoses than deaths annually. Recent discussions have challenged whether Grade Group 1 (GG1) PC should be labeled "cancer" due to its indolent nature. To address this question, an international symposium convened stakeholders from various fields.
