Article Abstract

A teaser bull is a term describing a bull whose reproductive system has been surgically altered to render him sterile. The purpose of such bulls is to aid in detection of cows in estrus to facilitate when to artificially inseminate. The bull is sterilized by either vasectomy or caudal epididymectomy. In addition to sterilization, other surgical options are described that prevent intromission and the spread of venereal disease. This article describes briefly some of those options. The procedures described are those preferred by the authors and can be performed in the field. Some of the pros and cons of these procedures are discussed.

Teaser: Most biotech companies go public before demonstrating clinical proof-of-concept with their lead asset. Because publicly available information about such preclinical assets is typically limited, we propose a procedure to improve the efficiency of assigning market value. For the period from 2010 to 2021, we observed a phenomenon of life sciences companies conducting IPOs without any assets having demonstrated clinical proof-ofconcept (POC).

Unlabelled: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and subsequent neurodegeneration is partially driven by chronic inflammation both locally and systemically. Yet, current clinical intervention strategies do not mitigate inflammation sequalae necessitating the development of innovative approaches to reduce inflammation and minimize deleterious effects of TBI. Herein, a subcutaneous formulation based on polymer of alpha-ketoglutarate (paKG) delivering glycolytic inhibitor PFK15 (PFKFB3 inhibitor, a rate limiting step in glycolysis), alpha-ketoglutarate (to fuel Krebs cycle) and peptide antigen from myelin proteolipid protein (PLP139-151) was utilized as the prophylactic immunosuppressive formulation in a mouse model of TBI.

The scarcity of human donor corneal graft tissue worldwide available for corneal transplantation necessitates the development of alternative therapeutic strategies for treating patients with corneal blindness. Corneal stromal stem cells (CSSCs) have the potential to address this global shortage by allowing a single donor cornea to treat multiple patients. To directly deliver CSSCs to corneal defects within an engineered biomatrix, we developed a UNIversal Orthogonal Network (UNION) collagen bioink that crosslinks with a bioorthogonal, covalent chemistry.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) significantly increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence, but the precise mechanisms behind this remain unclear.
  • A study found that the microtubule-associated protein 1S (MAP1S) is upregulated in metastatic HCC due to the action of HBV-encoded X protein (HBx), which in turn promotes tumor growth and survival.
  • Analysis of 150 HCC patients showed that higher MAP1S levels and lower levels of histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) correlated with shorter relapse-free survival, indicating a feedback loop involving MAP1S, Smad, and TGF-β1 that drives HBV-related HCC proliferation and

Unlabelled: Translation of mammalian telomeric G-rich RNA via the Repeat Associated non-AUG translation mechanism can produce two dipeptide repeat proteins: repeating valine-arginine (VR) and repeating glycine-leucine (GL). Their potentially toxic nature suggests that one or both must play a needed role in the cell. Using light microscopy combined with antibody staining we discovered that cultured human cells stain brightly for VR during mitosis with VR staining co-localizing with ribosomes.
