Popeye domain containing (POPDC) proteins are predominantly expressed in the heart and skeletal muscle, modulating the K potassium channel TREK-1 in a cAMP-dependent manner. and variants cause cardiac conduction disorders with or without muscular dystrophy. Searching for POPDC2-modulated ion channels using a functional co-expression screen in oocytes, we found POPDC proteins to modulate the cardiac sodium channel Nav1.

Time outdoors and residential greenness are associated with reduced systemic inflammation and allostatic load.

Environ Pollut

March 2024

Office of Research and Development, United States Environmental Protection Agency, Research Triangle Park, NC, USA.

Contacts with nature are linked with reduced morbidity and mortality. Hypothesized pathways include relaxation, physical activity, and improved immune function. This cross-sectional study of 320 adults in central North Carolina assessed health benefits of residential greenness using allostatic load (AL) and systemic inflammation (INFL) indices, composite biomarker-based measures of physiological dysregulation and inflammation, respectively.

Background: The role of irreversible airway inflammatory damage in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) progression is evident. Autophagy is an essential process in the cellular material metabolic cycle, and a family of resistant vegetative molecules may be involved in the COPD autophagic process. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of resistin-like molecule β (RELMβ) in COPD smoking-induced autophagy.

Bacillus anthracis spores are internalized in human lung epithelial cells by Rab GTPase-supported macropinocytosis.

Microb Pathog

Electronic address:

Inhalation anthrax, the deadliest form of the disease, requires inhaled B. anthracis spores to escape from the alveolar space and travel to the mediastinal lymph nodes, from where the vegetative form of the pathogen disseminates, resulting in a rapidly fatal outcome. The role of epithelia in alveolar escape is unclear, but previous work suggests these epithelial cells are involved in this process.

Therapeutic options for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) are very limited, and the prognosis using combination therapy with a chemotherapeutic drug and a targeted agent, e.g., epidermal growth factor receptor or tyrosine kinase, remains poor.
