Ribosome dysfunction in osteoarthritis.

Curr Opin Rheumatol

January 2022

Laboratory for Experimental Orthopedics, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Maastricht University.

Purpose Of Review: Translation of genetic information encoded within mRNA molecules by ribosomes into proteins is a key part of the central dogma of molecular biology. Despite the central position of the ribosome in the translation of proteins, and considering the major proteomic changes that occur in the joint during osteoarthritis development and progression, the ribosome has received very limited attention as driver of osteoarthritis pathogenesis.

Recent Findings: We provide an overview of the limited literature regarding this developing topic for the osteoarthritis field.

[Insulin-like growth factors. Future treatment in catabolism?].

Lakartidningen

June 1995

Institutionen för molekylär medicin, Karolinska institutet, Stockholm.

Growth is the result of complex interactions between nutrition, stimulating and inhibiting signal substances, and target cell response to these substances. The insulin-like growth factors, IGF-I and IGF-II, are important growth factors throughout life, and function both as endocrine and paracrine hormones. Their anabolic and growth promoting actions are mediated via the IGF-I receptor, present in all cells apart from liver and adipose cells, which contains the homologous insulin receptor.

1. Twelve patients who were treated twice eight hours a week for at least one year were admitted to a dialysis plan of twice seven hours a week and fourteen patients who were dialysed twice eight hours a week for at least one year were dialysed thrice four hours a week. The patients were dialysed with a spool dialysator with cuprophan membrane of a surface of 1 m2.

Intrarenal pressure gradients and glomerular dynamics have been investigated in dogs with severe dehydration elicited by pyloric ligation. 1. Because of the proportionate decrease in arterial pressure and renal blood flow, calculated total renal vascular resistance was found unaltered as compared with normohydrated controls.

In the introduction the authors describe the biological role of platelets, plasma protein, fibrinogen and erthrocytes as well as the methods of tagging, separating and measuring them. The advantage of platelet labelling with 75selenomethionine is that it allows production and life-span to be determined simultaneously, however, the in vivo measurements do not give information on the site of platelet sequestration. Protein anabolism as well as katabolism can be evaluated with it, and the simultaneous determination of platelet and fibrinogen turnover may be especially useful in pathological conditions.
