Halide-permeable xerogel films prepared from sols containing 50 mol% aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)/50 mol% tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) or 10 mol% APTES/90 mol% TEOS and 0.015 M selenoxide or telluride catalyst in the sol gave reduced settlement of cypris larvae of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite and larvae of the tubeworm Hydroides elegans in the presence of artificial seawater (ASW) and hydrogen peroxide (5-100 microM) relative to glass controls. Settlement of Ulva zoospores was lower on both the 50 mol% APTES/50 mol% TEOS and 10 mol% APTES/90 mol% TEOS xerogel formulations in comparison with glass controls with or without the added catalyst. The 50 mol% APTES/50 mol%TEOS xerogel containing telluride catalyst gave reduced settlement of Ulva zoospores in the presence of 100 microM H(2)O(2) in ASW compared with the same coating without added peroxide. Scanning electron microscopy and XPS data suggest that exposure to H(2)O(2) does not lead to chemical or morphological changes on the xerogel surface.

A surface-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticle containing dimercaprol monomers was created utilizing the sol-gel condensation process, using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica source and poloxamer as the structure directing agent. To accomplish this synthesis, 3-glycidoxypropyl triethoxysilane (GPTS, 20 mol%) was incorporated into the silica walls during the sol-gel condensation process, along with TEOS. Furthermore, dimercaprol (DM) monomers were incorporated onto silica surfaces by a ring-opening reaction between GPTS epoxy groups, and dimercaprol hydroxyl groups.

"Core/shell" composites are based on a ferrite core coated by two layers with different properties, one of them is an isolator, SiO, and the other is a semiconductor, TiO. These composites are attracting interest because of their structure, photocatalytic activity, and magnetic properties. Nanocomposites of the "core/shell" МFeO/SiO/TiO (М = Zn(II), Co(II)) type are synthesized with a core of MFeO produced by two different methods, namely the sol-gel method (SG) using propylene oxide as a gelling agent and the hydrothermal method (HT).

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disease characterized by vasoconstriction and remodeling of small pulmonary arteries (PAs). Central to the remodeling process is a switch of pulmonary vascular cells to a proliferative, apoptosis-resistant phenotype. Plasminogen activator inhibitors-1 and -2 (PAI-1 and PAI-2) are the primary physiological inhibitors of urokinase-type and tissue-type plasminogen activators (uPA and tPA), but their roles in PAH are unsettled.

The water produced during the oxidative esterification reaction occupies the active sites and reduces the activity of the catalyst. In order to reduce the influence of water on the reaction system, a hydrophobic catalyst was prepared for the one-step oxidative esterification of methylacrolein (MAL) and methanol. The catalyst was synthesized by loading the active component Au onto ZnO using the deposition-precipitation method, followed by constructing the silicon shell on Au/ZnO using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) to introduce hydrophobic groups.
