Understanding earthquake nucleation is vital for predicting and mitigating seismic events, saving lives, and enhancing construction practices in earthquake-prone areas. Cascade triggering and preslip triggering are prevalent theories, posing challenges in differentiation based on field observations. Our study employs a novel unsupervised machine learning pipeline, integrating macroscopic- and grain-scale data from stick-slip experiments in a discrete element method (DEM) framework.

A supervised machine learning model to select a cost-effective directional drilling tool.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Future University in Egypt (FUE), Cairo, 11835, Egypt.

With the increased directional drilling activities in the oil and gas industry, combined with the digital revolution amongst all industry aspects, the need became high to optimize all planning and operational drilling activities. One important step in planning a directional well is to select a directional tool that can deliver the well in a cost-effective manner. Rotary steerable systems (RSS) and positive displacement mud motors (PDM) are the two widely used tools, each with distinct advantages: RSS excels in hole cleaning, sticking avoidance and hole quality in general, while PDM offers versatility and lower operating costs.

Psychology, University of Waterloo, 200 University Ave., Waterloo, N2L 3G1, ON, Canada.

Often our expectations are set by sampling many times from the same distribution. When that distribution changes, so should our expectations. If we want to decide whether to take our umbrella today we need to have tracked, and updated, our estimate of the probability of rain by reference to recent temperatures and precipitation.
