Social, technological, and economic time series are divided by events which are usually assumed to be random, albeit with some hierarchical structure. It is well known that the interevent statistics observed in these contexts differs from the Poissonian profile by being long-tailed distributed with resting and active periods interwoven. Understanding mechanisms generating consistent statistics has therefore become a central issue. The approach we present is taken from the continuous-time random-walk formalism and represents an analytical alternative to models of nontrivial priority that have been recently proposed. Our analysis also goes one step further by looking at the multifractal structure of the interevent times of human decisions. We here analyze the intertransaction time intervals of several financial markets. We observe that empirical data describe a subtle multifractal behavior. Our model explains this structure by taking the pausing-time density in the form of a superstatistics where the integral kernel quantifies the heterogeneous nature of the executed tasks. A stretched exponential kernel provides a multifractal profile valid for a certain limited range. A suggested heuristic analytical profile is capable of covering a broader region.

The fracture process of heterogeneous materials is studied here in the framework of the discipline of Non-Extensive Statistical Mechanics. Acoustic emission data provided by an experimental protocol with concrete specimens, plain or fiber-reinforced, under bending are taken advantage of. This innovation of the study lies in the fact that the analysis of the acoustic activity is implemented in terms of the energy content of the acoustic signals rather than of their interevent time or their interevent distance.

Induced earthquakes are manifestations of highly heterogeneous distributions of effective stress changes imparted by anthropogenic activities such as hydraulic fracturing and wastewater injection. It is critical to disentangle the mechanisms behind these earthquakes to better assess seismic risk. Here, a clustering methodology is applied to a catalog of 21,536 induced earthquakes detected during a 36-d hydraulic stimulation program in Western Canada.

Favorable neighboring interactions and economical transmission costs are the foundations of formation-containment control (FCC), while the complex marine environments hamper its expansion on networked unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). In this context, this paper investigates an intermittent dynamic event-triggered control scheme for USVs experiencing communication interruptions to achieve FCC. Specifically, the control architecture consists of two synchronously working sub-layers.

In this paper, we investigate the event-based tracking control for two-wheeled mobile robots using a sliding mode control strategy. To address the conflict between the singularity problem and finite-time performance, a new nonsingular terminal sliding mode controller enabling mobile robots to achieve the tracking goal through a wireless network is developed. Further, redesign the controller using sampling information, in which an event condition is introduced to determine the sampling sequence, and the event-triggered controller avoids the high gain situation through the proposed sliding variables.
