Current research explores formation of bone like apatite on gelatin coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (GIOPs) to evaluate the bioactivity of the material. The GIOPs were soaked in simulated body fluid (SBF) and the apatite formation on the surface was investigated in regular interval of time. Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) and x-ray diffraction spectroscopic (XRD) analyses were done to investigate the chemical changes and field emission-scanning electron microscopic (FE-SEM) analysis was done to investigate the morphological changes occurring on the surface of the GIOPs after soaking in different time intervals. The kinetic studies of the apatite growth in SBF suggest that initially calcium and phosphorous ions were deposited to the surface of the GIOPs from the SBF leading to formation of amorphous Ca/P particles. Later, after 9 days of the incubation the amorphous particles were fused to form needle and blade like crystalline structures of bone like apatite.

Peripheral nerve injuries impair quality of life due to pain and loss of sensory and motor functions. Current treatments like autografts and nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) have limitations in functional restoration. Luminal fillers can enhance the effectiveness of NGCs by providing beneficial intraneural environments.

Background: Impairment of the visceral pleura following thoracic surgery often leads to air leaks and intrathoracic adhesions. For preventing such complications, mesothelial cell proliferation at the pleural defects can be effective. To develop new materials for pleural defects restoration, we constructed a hybrid artificial pleural tissue (H-APLT) combining polyglycolic acid (PGA) nanofiber sheets with a three-dimensional culture of mesothelial cells and fibroblasts and evaluated its therapeutic efficacy in a rat pleural defect model.

Surface-mediated transmission of pathogens plays a key role in healthcare-associated infections. However, proper techniques for its quantitative analysis are lacking, making it challenging to develop novel antimicrobial and anti-fouling surfaces to reduce pathogen spread via environmental surfaces. This study demonstrates a gelatin hydrogel-based touch transfer test, the HydroTouch test, to evaluate pathogen transmission on high-touch surfaces under semi-dry conditions.

Dressings are prone to adhering to new tissues, leading to secondary harm to the wound during dressing replacement. To address this issue, many strategies have been proposed to endow dressings with anti-adhesive functions. However, the introduction of exogenous agents or stimuli is always needed, and difficulty in achieving adaptive removal is also present.

An easy-to-synthesize aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active Schiff base HNSA was obtained by condensing equimolar amount of 3-hydroxy-2-naphthohydrazide and salicylaldehyde. In pure DMSO, HNSA is non-fluorescent, but increasing the HEPES (HO, 10 mM, pH 7.4) fraction (f) ≥ 90% showed an intense green fluorescence with maximum fluorescence intensity at 515 nm.
