Root-surface phosphatase activities were measured in natural and semi-natural shrublands across an European climatic gradient of temperature and rainfall including Wales (WL), Denmark (DK), Netherlands (NL), Hungary (HU), Italy (IT) and Spain (SP). In each site a warming experiment was conducted since 1999 or 2001 by means of passive night-time warming using reflective curtains that covered the vegetation at night. The treatments increased yearly average soil temperatures around 0. 8 degrees C in most of sites. Root-surface phosphatase activity values ranged between 56 mg PNP g(-1) h(-1) in IT and 3.5 mg PNP g(-1) h(-1) in HU. Warming had no effect on root-surface phosphatase activity across the sites and only in Hungary a slight increase was detected. Plants at Mediterranean sites (IT, SP) showed a higher root-surface phosphatase activity than plants at temperate sites (WL, NL, DK). We suggest it might be an adaptation of plant species evolved under Mediterranean climate that allows them a) to compensate in wet period for the decrease in phosphatase activity, and thus P uptake, during drought periods, and/or b) to benefit from soluble organic P flushes following the frequent drying-rewetting episodes experienced by soils in Mediterranean ecosystems.

Phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) affect seedling growth, root configuration, and nutrient uptake in hydroponic rice, but there are few studies on all growth stages of rice. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the response characteristics of root morphology, plant physiology, and P and K uptake and utilization efficiency to different supplies of P and K. Two local conventional rice varieties (Shennong 265 and Liaojing 294) were used as experimental materials across four treatments, including HPHK (sufficient P and K supply), HPLK (sufficient P supply under low K levels), LPHK (sufficient K supply under low P levels) and LPLK (low P and K levels) in a hydroponic setting.

Introduction: External root resorption following avulsion injury is a complex process wherein differentiation of macrophages (Mϕ) to multinucleated osteoclasts is temporally regulated by resident periodontal fibroblasts (PDLF). The current study aims to assess the effect of engineered bioactive chitosan nanoparticles (CSNP), sustained released dexamethasone conjugated CSNP (CS-DEX) and CSNP functionalized with photosensitizer Rose Bengal (CSRB) for application in root resorption using an in-vitro PDLF-Mϕ direct coculture model and in-vivo delayed reimplantation model.
Methods: PDLF-Mϕ direct coculture system was exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), macrophage colony stimulating factor, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa β ligand with or without CSNP/CS-DEX for 7 days.
