An 11-bp deletion in the bovine myostatin (MSTN) gene was identified as the causative mutation for the double-muscling phenotype in Belgian Blue and Asturiana cattle. More recently, this mutation was also identified in the South Devon breed of cattle, in which it has been found to be associated with a general increase in muscle mass. The present study found that the mutant allele was also segregating in a commercial population of Scottish Aberdeen Angus beef cattle. The mutation was found at a low frequency (0.04) with no animals homozygous for the mutation in the sample population (536 animals). The effects of this mutation on various carcass traits of economic interest were then tested. We found that the mutation significantly increased carcass weight, sirloin weight, hindquarter weight, muscle conformation score and eye muscle area, but had no effect on the fat traits.

Unlabelled: Genome editing, particularly using the CRISPR/Cas system, has revolutionized biological research and crop improvement. Despite the widespread use of CRISPR/Cas9, it faces limitations such as PAM sequence requirements and challenges in delivering its large protein into plant cells. The hypercompact Cas12f, derived from (AsCas12f), stands out due to its small size of only 422 amino acids and its preference for a T-rich motif, presenting advantageous features over SpCas9.

Background: Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA) is a lysosomal storage disease caused by biallelic variants in the N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase (GALNS) gene and is characterized by progressive and multi-system involvements, dominantly with skeletal deformities. A mild form of MPS IVA often presents with atypical symptoms and can go unrecognized for years.

Methods: The diagnosis of MPS IVA was confirmed via GALNS enzyme activity testing in leukocytes.

Belgian blue (BB) cattle have an 11-bp deletion in myostatin that causes skeletal muscle hyperplasia and increased muscle mass, leading to a 'double-muscled' phenotype. Preliminary data suggest that this phenotype may be associated with breed-specific hematologic and biochemical values. Therefore, in this study, we sought to compare hematologic and serum biochemical parameters in healthy BB and Holstein Friesian (HF) cows and to propose breed-specific reference intervals for BB cows.

Leaf variegation caused by plastome structural variation: an example from .

Variegated plants often exhibit plastomic heteroplasmy due to single-nucleotide mutations or small insertions/deletions in their albino sectors. Here, however, we identified a plastome structural variation in albino sectors of the variegated plant (Asphodelaceae), a perennial herbaceous plant widely cultivated as an ornamental in tropical Asia. This structural variation, caused by intermolecular recombination mediated by an 11-bp inverted repeat flanking a 92-bp segment in the large single-copy region (LSC), generates a giant plastome (228 878 bp) with the largest inverted repeat of 105 226 bp and the smallest LSC of 92 bp known in land plants.
