Phylogenetic Characterization of Strains from Oysters and its Comparison with Clinical E Genotype Strain.

Foodborne Pathog Dis

January 2025

Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada, Baja California (CICESE), Baja California, México.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers sequenced 21 bacterial strains from an Ensenada collection, mostly from oysters, to explore genetic differences between clinical (C-genotype) and environmental (E-genotype) strains.
  • The study confirmed previous findings that identified 9 strains as E and 12 as C, using specific gene presence and virulence factors for differentiation.
  • Despite the genetic distinctions between the two groups, no single element was found that could definitively indicate the potential pathogenicity of oyster isolates.

Epidemiology of Staphylococcus aureus food isolates: Comparison of conventional methods with whole genome sequencing typing methods.

Food Microbiol

January 2025

ANSES, Laboratory for Food Safety, Staphylococcus, Bacillus and Clostridium Unit (SBCL), 94706, Maisons-Alfort, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates various typing methods for Staphylococcus aureus to determine the best approach for epidemiological investigations and outbreak analysis.
  • Methods compared included PFGE, MLST, cgMLST, cSNP, and enterotoxin profiling on 351 S. aureus isolates, assessing their discriminatory power and reliability.
  • Results showed that cgMLST and cSNP performed best in distinguishing strains and resolving population structure, while all methods effectively identified related strains in outbreak scenarios.

Early detection of disseminating vancomycin-resistant (VREfm) in ICU wards is crucial for outbreak identification and the implementation of prompt infection control measures. Genotypic methods like pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) are costly and time-consuming, hindering rapid response due to batch dependency. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) offers the potential for real-time outbreak detection and reliable strain typing.

Background And Objectives: O157: H7 is one of the most important causes of hemorrhagic colitis, and hemolytic uremic syndrome. The present study aimed to isolate O157: H7 from foods and patients with hemorrhagic colitis, and identify Shiga toxin genes, phylogenetic comparison, and antibiotic resistance of the isolates.

Materials And Methods: In total 400 samples, including patients stool and food were taken in Isfahan-Iran province.
