Object: Early postnatal brain maturation is closely connected to local changes of metabolite levels. Spatially resolved in vivo (1)H NMR spectroscopic imaging is applied to follow absolute changes of brain metabolites in early postnatal mouse brain.

Materials And Methods: A short echo time semi LASER (localization by adiabatic selective refocusing) chemical shift imaging (CSI) sequence incorporating weighted k-space averaging was implemented at high magnetic field (17.6 T). In vivo measurements were carried out on postnatal days 5, 8, 12, 16, and 20. In vivo relaxation times T (1) and T (2) were measured using variable repetition times or a CPMG sequence, respectively, combined with LASER single voxel localization.

Results: Spectra were obtained with a spatial resolution of (1 x 1) mm(2) in a 1.5 mm slice as early as postnatal day 5. Maturational changes of absolute metabolite concentrations of major metabolites were calculated in four different brain regions. A significant increase of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), total creatine (tCr), and glutamate/glutamine (Glx) concentration was paralleled by a decrease of taurine (Tau) concentration with age (P < 0.05). Differences between brain regions were found for NAA, tCr, and Tau (P < 0.05). Furthermore, in vivo T (1) and T (2) of the four major brain metabolites in adult mice are reported.

Conclusion: The implemented semi LASER CSI sequence allows following regional changes of metabolite levels. It is suitable for investigation of local differences in brain metabolism and development.

Background: Beta-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) was first identified as the rate limiting enzyme of amyloid-β-peptide (Aβ) production. The catalytic activity of BACE1 favors the generation of Aβ peptides and overproduction and accumulation of Aβ in the brain triggers downstream neurotoxic events that pertain to the amyloid cascade, leading to the formation of neuritic plaques. Background: The Newborn Behaviour Observation system (NBO) is a flexible relationship-based intervention designed to sensitise parents to their newborn's capacities, to increase parental confidence and foster the bond between parent and infant. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an NBO intervention on maternal confidence during the first month postpartum, and on the quality of mother-infant interaction at infant age 4 months in a sample of mothers who exhibit elevated signs of distress or depression during pregnancy and/or describe prior experiences of mental health issues.

Method: Pregnant women with current emotional distress and/or a history of anxiety and depression were recruited from a healthcare centre in Reykjavik, between August 2016 and April 2018.

Exercise can be leveraged as an important tool to improve neural and psychological health, either on its own or to bolster the efficacy of evidence-based treatment modalities. Research in both humans and animal models shows that positive experiences, such as exercise, promote neuroprotection while, in contrast, aversive experiences, particularly those in early development, are often neurologically and psychologically disruptive. In the current study, we employed a preclinical model to investigate the therapeutic benefits of exercise on gene expression in the brains of adult rats.
