Discerning the meaning of an utterance requires not only mastering grammar and knowing the meanings of words but also understanding the communicative (i.e., pragmatic) features of language. Although it has been an ever present aspect of linguistic analyses and discussions, it is only over the last ten years or so that cognitive scientists have been investigating--in a concerted fashion--the pragmatic features of language experimentally. We begin by highlighting Paul Grice's contributions to ordinary language philosophy and show how it has led to this active area of experimental investigation. We then focus on two exemplary phenomena--'scalar inference' and 'reference resolution'--before considering other topics that fit into the paradigm known as 'experimental pragmatics'.

Introduction: Maternal undernutrition and inflammation in utero may significantly impact the neurodevelopmental potential of offspring. However, few studies have investigated the effects of pregnancy interventions on long-term child growth and development. This study will examine the effects of prenatal nutrition and infection management interventions on long-term growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes of offspring.

Metal-Core-Specific Screening with Machine Learning: Accelerating the Discovery of Metal Oxide Clusters for Enhanced EUV Lithography Resolution.

Obtaining effective extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL) materials for pragmatic applications remains challenging. The experimental design and conventional theoretical prediction are time-consuming and costly and hardly affordable to accelerate the discovery of commercial EUVL materials. In this work, we employed the machine learning (ML) technique to predict the ionization potential of promising EUVL materials, which is closely related to the photoresists' solubility switch.

When we use language to communicate, we must choose what to say, what not to say, and how to say it. That is, we must decide how to the message. These linguistic choices matter: Framing a discussion one way or another can influence how people think, feel, and act in many important domains, including politics, health, business, journalism, law, and even conversations with loved ones.

Background: Building capacity for evidence-based treatment and support for people with substance use disorders (SUD) is an urgent priority in the context of the toxic drug poisoning crisis. We implemented the first substance use-focused Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) in Western Canada for health care providers, to enhance their clinical addiction skills and knowledge, facilitate practice change, and foster a supportive community of practice. The aims of this article are to describe our innovations to the Project ECHO model in British Columbia (BC) and Yukon, and present key program outcomes.
