Published: October 2010

Systems and procedures for locking doors after hours to prevent criminal and other intrusions may not necessarily provide the security they promise even if they are found operational during officer rounds. The authors describe an inspection program involving security and engineering which is used at their medical center to anticipate and test for the many unforeseen things which can compromise door security.

Clavicle emergency fixation can prevent fractured end from piercing heart and lung organs, which is crucial for wounded life. Clavicle with complex structure, great individual differences, and adjacent to important organs, which places high-requirements on performance of fixation materials. Developing advanced clavicle fixation material is a prominent hot-topic in the field of emergency-engineering.

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), presenting spatial and temporal control of ROS generation triggered by ultrasound field, has attracted considerable attention in tumor treatment. However, its therapeutic efficacy is severely hindered by the intrinsic hypoxia of solid tumor and the lack of smart design in material band structure. Here in study, fine α-FeO nanoparticles armored with Pt nanocrystals (α-FeO@Pt) was investigated as an alternative SDT agent with ingenious bandgap and structural design.

Mollusc and brachiopod shells have served as biological armour for hundreds of millions of years. Studying shell strength in compression experiments can provide insights into macroevolution, predator-prey dynamics, and anthropogenic impacts on aquatic ecosystems. These studies have been conducted across fields including palaeontology, ecology, conservation biology and engineering using a range of techniques for a variety of purposes.

In previous work, we have demonstrated the use of single-holed Armoured Microbubbles (AMBs) for microfluidic mixing and self-propulsion. AMBs are hollow partial spheres, inside which we capture a bubble. Under ultrasound, the bubble oscillates, generating a streaming flow with velocities of 1-100 mm/s in water.
