Objective: To evaluate pleural drainage using a one-way flutter valve following elective lung resection.

Methods: This was a prospective study, with descriptive analysis, of 39 lung resections performed using a one-way flutter valve to achieve pleural drainage during the postoperative period. Patients less than 12 years of age were excluded, as were those submitted to pneumonectomy or emergency surgery, those who were considered lost to follow-up and those in whom water-seal drainage was used as the initial method of pleural drainage. Lung expansion, duration of the drainage, hospital stay and postoperative complications were noted.

Results: A total of 36 patients were included and analyzed in this study. The mean duration of pleural drainage was 3.0 +/- 1.6 days. At 30 days after the surgical procedure, chest X-ray results were considered normal for 34 patients (95.2%). Postoperative complications occurred in 8 patients (22.4%) and were related to the drainage system in 3 (8.4%) of those.

Conclusions: The use of a one-way flutter valve following elective lung resection was effective, was well tolerated and presented a low rate of complications.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the global, gender, and age-related cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden during 2010-2019. Not only the global trend in the prevalence of CVDs was studied but also whether there was a statistically significant difference between genders and ages during 2010-2019.

Material And Methods: Detailed information from 2010 to 2019, including global rates of prevalence of 11 categories of CVD, was collected from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

Several studies have reported circadian periodicity of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). It remains unclear to what extent this circadian rhythm is influenced by variation in patients' activities. One way to elucidate this is to compare patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) with those with in-hospital cardiac arrests (IHCAs).

Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) is traditionally managed with an intercostal chest tube attached to an underwater seal. We investigated whether use of a one-way flutter valve shortened patients' length of stay (LoS).This open-label randomised controlled trial enrolled patients presenting with SSP and randomised to either a chest tube and underwater seal (standard care: SC) or ambulatory care (AC) with a flutter valve.

15-Year Trends in Patients Hospitalised With Heart Failure and Enrolled in an Australian Heart Failure Management Program.

November 2019

University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia; Cardiology Department, Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Background: Heart failure (HF) is associated with high morbidity and mortality, and is a major contributor to health care costs. Since the area continues to be rapidly evolving, the aim of this study was to examine 15-year trends in demographics, precipitants, symptoms and outcomes of patients hospitalised with HF, and consider the individual and societal implications.

Methods: Data were prospectively collected by Heart Failure nurses from patients enrolled in the Management of Cardiac Function program (MACARF) in Northern Sydney, Australia.

Reasons For Performing Study: Atrial fibrillation cycle length (AFCL) is an indicator of atrial electrical remodelling during atrial fibrillation (AF).

Objectives: To compare AFCL measured invasively from an intra-atrial electrogram (AFCLEGM ) with AFCL measured noninvasively by atrial colour tissue Doppler imaging (AFCLTDI ).

Study Design: Prospective descriptive clinical study.
