Background/aims: The study aimed to investigate whether acid suppression influences gastric myoelectrical activity in patients with reflux disease.
Methodology: Twenty-eight patients with erosive esophagitis underwent electrogastrography. All patients were studied before and after esomeprazole. Subjects were divided into mild or moderate esophagitis in order to determine any variation in response related to esophagitis severity.
Results: The reflux symptom improved from 4.2 at baseline to 1.0 at week 8 (P < 0.001). A significant increase in postprandial gastric 3 cycle per minute (normal) activity was observed at week 8 (P < 0.05). There was also significantly increased postprandial gastric 3 cycle per minute (normal) activity in moderate esophagitis (P < 0.05).
Conclusions: The effect of acid suppression on gastric myoelectrical activity is subtle with an enhancement in normal gastric myoelectrical activity. The myoelectrical response to acid suppression appears to be associated with esophagitis severity.

Multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable hematological malignancy that necessitates the identification of novel therapeutic strategies. Here, we report that intracellular levels of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) control the cytotoxicity of MM chemotherapeutic agents. Inhibition of VLCFA biosynthesis reduced cell death in MM cells caused by the proteasome inhibitor, bortezomib.

This study investigated the effects of cholic acid (CA) on steroid hormone synthesis and follicular development in mouse ovaries and the regulatory mechanism of CA on the expression of steroidogenesis-related genes in granulosa cells. The mice were divided into control and CA groups, and serum and ovarian samples were collected after 1, 2, and 4 months of treatment, respectively. The results showed that CA treatment for 1, 2, and 4 months reduced ovarian weights, disrupted the estrous cycle, decreased the number of antral follicles and corpora lutea, and lowered the serum levels of progesterone and estradiol.

Small-molecule pectin (SMP) extracted from the leaves of Premna ligustroides Hemsl, with a molecular weight range of 5000-35,000 Da, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering properties in vitro. This study explored the effects of SMP on hypercholesterolemia in mice, with a focus on inflammation, lipid profiles, and cholesterol metabolism. Mice received SMP at doses of 607, 303, and 152 mg/kg body weight.
